I've been using SMS Installer for about 6 years for scripting installations and its time to move on to other tools. I've dabbled with AutoIT and I have been trying to teach myself VB, but I am not getting anywhere fast. Besides, I need to be able to compile the script into an exe and deploy it via what ever tool is at my disposal (LANDesk, SMS, etc...) and I don't want to be working around licensing issues. I am not so much looking for a packaging tool, but more a scripting tool to provide logic for software installations.

I'd like a utility like SMS Installer (gui based), but without the licensing. Any suggestions?

I've been using SMS Installer for about 9 years?  But almost never use it anymore.  I've gotten into AutoIt a lot.  AutoIt is amazing in what it can do, it is free, has a massive support community, and can compile into an exe easily.  If you've had a hard time with it I'd recommend visiting the support forums.  Read through example scripts.  Try creating some scripts and then get help from the community.  Read the help guide.

AutoIt is much easier than vbscript or anything else.  AutoIt also has a GUI for developing scripts and GUIs which is also free.

The only issue with AutoIT is that you can't run scripts outside of the user environment (i.e., the PC has to be logged in).
