I'm trying to create a simple Task sequence to wipe a drive and then install Vista PE. The sequence has just 2 Tasks - both are the canned choices

"Format and Partition Disk" with disk 0, Standard MBR and 100% remaining space on Primary partition.
"Apply Operating System Image" and a standard Vista PE iamge selected.
Neither task has any options assigned.

I get this error:"The task sequence execution engine failed executing the action (Format and Partition Disk) in the group (Initialization) with the error code 50"

I can't find any reference to Error 50 anywhere and can't figure out why it stops?

I'm a total newbie with ConfigMgr having been forced to switch over from Altiris.

Any input would be appreciated.

Using SMSTrace error lookup it suggests that error 50 is 'The request is not supported. Source: Windows'. Not sure this is going to help much, it may be a driver issue with the hardware not being supported in the VistaPE wim. Find out what the disk drives are and add them to the VistaPE wim.

Hope this helps and welcome to the world of an SMS administrator ;-)

Adrian.

I appreciate the attempt, but the Task Sequence is failing at the Format and Partition step - it never makes it to the next step to try to image the disk, so I don't think it can be an issue with the image?

Perhaps to that end - what the heck are the variables in the Options section of the default Format and Partition: SMSTSDownloadOnDemand not equals True and SMSTSMediaType not equals FullMedia? I didn't put them there, but I'm working off a pre-built Task Sequence that either came with ConfigMgr or was setup by our install consultant... My status message doesn't reflect these conditions being met or failing, and I know it usually does if they fail right? Regardless, I tried removing them without change.

WHY OH WHY is this all so f'ing complicated??

Anyway, I needed to get these systems wiped and sent back on lease so I just went back and got it done in a few minutes with Altiris, but as I mentioned, I'm being forced out of it and into Config Mgr, so I really need to be able to figure these things out.

Is there some better/easier way to simply wipe hard drives and leave a bootable OS on them for lease return??

What environment are you using to run the task sequence?  Is the system already booted into PE via media or PXE?  If you are running the TS from within an installed version of Windows itslef, I would expect it to fail because you are attemppting to format the current system drive which you can't do.
