Hello,
I am trying to push out Office 2007 to our remote offices with the help of BITS. The install package is 765 MB. Under the BITS tab for Computer Client Agent Properties, I have selected:
Apply to branch distribution points and all clients.
Start window time: 6AM
End window time: 10PM.
Maximum transfer rate during the window set to 80 Kbps.

I did a test push to one remote computer and it maxed out the Internet line. I was expecting for the download speed to be throttled to 80 Kbps. The client machine received the BITS registry keys. Keys under HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\BITS are all correct. The client is Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Are my expectations correct regarding how BITS is suppose to work? Any help where to look why the deployment maxed out the network connection? Thanks for your help.

Keep in mind that BITS is only LAN aware.  If you have a 100MB switch connected to a 1MB line BITS can only see the 100MB connection.  :(

This is the part where I am confused. I am quoting from this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457145.aspx#ECAA

quote:

BITS is only aware of the network conditions on the client computer; BITS is not aware of network conditions beyond the client. If there are no applications running on the client that use the network, BITS consumes most of the available bandwidth.

This is what I think BITS should do, let me know if I'm wrong. If I manage the deployment correctly, i.e. spread out the deployment, each remote download should only consume 80 kb/s. I can push out to approx 10 PCs at a time and my site-to-site VPN connections should be OK. If I were to push out to all my remote offices, then they would try to download at 80 kb/s, thus filling up my network connection.

Thanks for your help.
