System reboots after loading WinPE
Monday, January 09, 2012 2:12 AM
( permalink)
I am trying to OSDnew Dell E6420machine using SCCM. The machine boots from PXE and starts loading WinPE. I see WinPE SCCM background image with a window ‘Windows is starting up‘ after that you briefly see message ‘Preparing network connection‘. The message disappears and I only see the background, and then system reboots.

Its probably an issue with network drivers. Make sure that you have the 'Enable Command Support' tickbox ticked in your boot image's 'Windows PE' tab. Now, when you get into windows PE, press 'F8' to open a DOS box. Do an ipconfig and make sure you have an IP address. If not, you need to add the correct NIC driver into your boot image (Remember you need the Windows 7 drivers for PE v3, Vista drivers for v2)

If your running SCCM in native mode check the date and time in your BIOS Hit F8 if you have it setup to open a cmd window and verify you have an IP, if you do grab the smsts.log and copy it out to a network location so you can provide some details from it. -Mike

You can get a driver cab file for that particular model from en.community.dell -dot -com/techcenter/enterprise-client/w/wiki/latitude-e6420-windows-7-driver-cab.aspx We don't do many Dells, but that's a lifesaver when you get a request to image 30 of a new model out of the blue.

Just curious, but did you check out this KB article? I'd be curious where PXE, WDS, and DHCP are all configured as it relates to the KB article below. Regards, JC
