Hello,

Wondering if anyone has run into this one before...

SMS 2003 SP3. Last month we had no problem running large queries from the console. (ie add/rem programs %visio%) It would return 17,000+ records. Now we're not able to get more than ~7000 records for any query.

We've done the basics (rebooted the primary server, check to see if this is happening from multiple PC's, check permissions,etc..), but none of that helped.

The only thing that has changed is we updated to SQL 2005 SP2 from SQL 2005. But that upgrade took place after the first reported issue...

This has me kind of stumped. I haven't called Joe Microsoft yet, but I'm wondering if anyone here has any ideas.

Let me know,
Thanks
Jerry

Dang no takers eh? Well let me ask a different question then:

Does anyone know what logs I can look at, when a console query is run?

Well, the problem might be with your queries, or it might be with your clients, or it might be your servers or the network or any number of things.  If you look at the ALL SYSTEMS collection, do you have fewer machines than you're expecting?

Are your queries based on other collections?  Has someone changed any of those collection queries lately so that they're returning the wrong number of clients and then any dependent collections/queries will also show the wrong number....

I think there are just so many reasons that it's hard to know where to tell you to start looking

Hey John,

Thanks for the response. I hear what you're saying. It's like going to google and doing a search on the word "Internet"... where to begin...

Something i failed to mention earlier (sorry..) is that the issue is intermittent. I can run back to back reports and one time get a full set of data, the second time it's truncated. So based on that I'm thinking the collections/queries themselves are fine.

Our all systems collection looks okay. I was looking at the Smsprov.log when a query is run. Didn't see any red flags in there.

I'll take a look at network bandwidth next to see if that could be contibuting.

Is there a time out built-into the console for running a query?

Thanks
Jerry

Yeah, there's a timeout...I don't remember if it's 90 seconds or 2 minutes or what, but if you're not seeing a timeout error, then that's not the problem.  And if it times out, it won't give you a partial result set, you'll just get an error, so I don't think that's the problem.

Think we figured it out. NIC/fiber issues on the Primary server. Everything in SMS looked fine, so that's why i was scratching my head. Even the server looked okay (no red flags). We got some help from our Windows Server team, and i think we're heading in the right direction.

Thanks for the help John,

Jerry
