Hi,

I'm about to configure BDD 2007 and to add Operating Systems. I already did this on a couple of servers and haven't had any issues. This time, I open the workbench and try to add an operating system. I can select the source path, the name of the OS is displayed correctly, then the process windows shows up for a couple of seconds and disappears. The same happens with Windows PE or any wim file I try to import. Adding drivers is no issue.

Any idea why this is happening? What am I missing? Server is W2K3 Sp2 english, BDD with Update, WAIK 1.1. No messages is event viewer, no dialog is displayed before the process windows closes. I've never seen this and implemented 5 other BDD 2007 environments. The only thing that changed with this server is that it got virtualized with VMware. But I don't believe that this is an issue.

The only thing that the import OS does in BDD/MDT is copy (or move) the wim file and add an entry for it to the XML config files.  Is there enough disk space for the wim to get copied?  Is there a name collision with a previous OS import?

Hi Jason,

I do have about 50GB of disk space, so this should be sufficient to copy the source files of a W2K3 installation or a wim file. Because it's a fresh installation, there's nothing imported yet that could cause a name collision. I've never had this effect in all other BDD installations and configurations I've done and I'm just following the same guide lines. It might be something with the server configuration but I've no idea where to start with the search and comparison of the other servers where BDD works fine.

Try running filemon at the same time as you try the import.  Maybe there's a permissions issue somewhere or file corruption issues that filemon will point out.

It turned out to be an either missing or wrong defined key of WAIK 1.1. The new process monitor from Sysinternals was complaining about not finding a certain key from WAIK and creating it all the time. I deinstalled WAIK, didn't do a reboot, re-installed and could import my operating systems.

I really wonder why this was happening because it was a fresh installation of WAIK 1.1. I did it just before upgrading to BDD 2007 SP1.

Quick queston: why are you using BDD 2007 instead of MDT?

Because I have to  It's a customer's choice, not mine. It took them ages to get it up and running for their purposes, the rollout is just about to start. They won't change anything now.
