My current path documented for upgrade is this.

My central site Harware is outdated and being replaced.  I have planned to do a site backup and restopre to the new hardware then perform an inplace upgrade.  The big benifit is I do not have to re-create collections, packages, advertisements, etc... The downfall is there is no way to get to 64 B OS in this scenerio.  The only way is to rip and replace with a side by side upgrade.  There will be a lot of work involved with somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500+ packages 1500+collecitons/queries, plus advertisements and other rules.

My question is - Is 64Bit worth it?  My new server will be a 4 Proc Dual core box with 8 G of memory hooked to a SAN with 300G of storage. All this running on Server Enterprise 2003 (08 if released soon).  Is it worth the effort to migrate all that data or should I stick with 32B and worry about it in 5 years?

What are you doing?

How are you handling the upgrade?

Thanks in advance

Tadd

Hey Tadd,
We will be staying with 32-bit for now (not that its the right decision mind you)

In SMS2003 there is a free utility that allows you to export all your packages, adverts, collection and import them into a new site.  We just completed a rebuild of our current production environment with this utility.  I am hopeful that the community will develop a similar utility/script for SCCM.    With this utility we were able to build out the new Primary Site server, import all our "stuff" and with minimal tweaking and validation testing we were ready to flash cut our clients over.  If not looking to retain client history this is a very efficient method for rebuilds. (very simplified of course)

Here is another route to think about...

Upgrade my existing central site to SCCM
Install 64B SCCM on my new central site
Set the parent to the old Central site (it will get all the packages and collecitons)
Start Migrating all the other primary sites under the New central Site
Disconnect the New central site from the old central site and decom the box.

Any issues with that method?

I dont believe so...  I am pretty confidant though that the community will come up with a n updtaed version for SCCM.

tandrle231...you mentioned installing 64bit SCCM. Are you referring to the OS being 64 bit or the SCCM install being 64bit? My understanding was that the SCCM install is 32bit. Got this from a moderator on a Technet SCCM forum. (http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2258706&SiteID=17) Just wanted to make sure you were aware of that...or maybe you know something that I don't about this.

A few of us were talking about this issue of 32 vs 64 bit installation back in October. I consolidated the info we found in a post back in October. You can find it here: http://www.myitforum.com/forums/OS_for_SCCM_Install%25_32bit_or_64bit%3F/m_167574/tm.htm. It's probably a bunch of stuff that you have already considered...your environment is a lot more complex than mine.

SCCM will work on 64 bit but will run in a 32 emulation mode so you will see no improvement.  This might change we the R2 release.  As for SQL We are running 64Bit SQL and a 32Bit SCCM server.  SQL 64bit will give you a performance gain, SCCM will not...

Well two things, i read on the list that Microsoft has a non advertised tool that will migrate 2003 objects into sccm in a side by side migration.  You would have to get with your TAM.  (again, just read have not tested or requested)  About the 64bit OS.. I implemented my primary server on 2008 64bit OS and saw a big difference in performace.  I did load sql2005 64bit so the difference was in SQL as i was able to take advantaage of my 24 gig of memory.  SCCM ran in WOW  mode, do recomend.
