Good day
I have been working in the SMS space since 1994 so I know the concepts of the product quite well and the trauma involved in installing it vanilla, out of the box. Family matters have taken me away for about a year and I am about to come back.
I have been reading up a little on SCCM and decided here is a place to start.
I’ve tried my first vanilla install of the eval and come across similar problem that I had with the original SMS2003 (DCOM on the clients, server connecting as itself and a few other little foibles)
I have my on “bible of notes” on how to install a vanilla SMS 2003 site and 5 clients.
Would you recommend installing vanilla SMS2003 and getting this fully functional first then overlaying / upgrading this to SCCM or would you persevere with SCCM and create a brand new bible?

Depends. I think you should build your lab to simulate what you will do in production. So if you have an exisitng SMS 2003 environment that you will be upgrading, then build your lab the same way. If you have no existing (or will just be dumping it) SMS 2003, then build the ConfigMgr site from scratch.

Of course if you have all the time in the world, then keep rebuilding the lab using different types of scenarios to get a good understanding of it all.

Mark's comment "So if you have an exisitng SMS 2003 environment that you will be upgrading, then build your lab the same way" is right on. This will be particularly important if you have installed feature packs in SMS 2003. For example, the OSD feature pack in SMS 2003 must be uninstalled before upgrading SMS to SCCM. Those kinds of gotchas will be important.

If you are dumping SMS 2003, or doing a side-by-side upgrade, then you might consider a scratch build.

Thanks for the input.
Having messed with sccm over many late nights I shall now give you the answer to my own question.
Install Vanilla sms 2003 first apply all the tips and tricks that you know and love to get the basic client functionality working.
Then upgrade to SCCM
Why do I suggest this?
Client Push install seems to have changed significantly and there are now an equal number of (formally undocumented but researchable) rules to apply just as there were with SMS 2003. If you do Vanilla SCCM you will not get Client push to work without a lot of digging around and therefore will not get your hands on SCCM functionality in your first week plus
So having not got Client push to work automatically I will be trashing and starting again with SMS 2003 first.
And if you’re interested - I can get client push to work if I initiate the push (right click a client in the MMC and select Install client) but SCCM will not even attempt to Auto install a new client that is added to the domain and meets all the criteria of the manual push client. More research for formally undocumented but researchable tips is required.
