What role if any does WINS play in SMS 2003?
We are a 2003 AD domain with the schema extended.   I noticed about 50 XP SP2 clients that can't find a DP. I've verified that there is a DP for their subnets.  I discovered that on an IPconfig that they are not getting any WINS server info and they have an odd subent mask.
I was under the impression that WINS was out of the loop if my schema was extended.

WINS is not needed if the schema has been extended.

Yes, dns is all good.  I'm hoping WINS is not the problem.  Were going to add the WINS server back into the DHCP scope for one of these sites later today and see what happens.  If this fixes it then something is wrong somewhere.  I can see the SMS info in AD so that means I'm extended properly.  DNS checks out OK.  Can this be anything else??  What about the subnet mask these sites have?  They are 255.255.255.128.  Our other sites are all 255.255.255.0.  Not sure what impact that would have.

If you subnet mask is wrong the clients will not install because they will not fall into any of your site boundaries.

It is the subnet mask.  I remoted to one of the troubled clients and set the IP info manually with WINS and no change.  I then change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and things started running immediately.  The problem now is that the network side is using this 255.255.255.128 mask at sites that have a split subnet, half range for data and half for voice.  I believe it's called a sub class-c network.  Even if I go into sites and services and change that site to use this other mask the clients still do not find a DP.

Take a look at this.
http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jgilbert/archive/2007/08/21/how-to-determine-a-client-s-subnet-mask-when-defining-ip-subnet-boundaries.aspx

It might be easier to use AD sites instead. This assumes that they are setup correctly too.
