Well my wife called me yesterday in a bad mood.  Basicly this happened:
A person called her and told her that "their database says her computer has a problem"  Asking what database, she was given the same response.  The person had a thick accent which made it hard to understand.  The person on the other end asked her to vist a website so the machine could be fixed.  When she refused and was asked again to visit the site.  Upon this she told him that her husband was an IT professional and could call him back if necessary.  At once he said thank you and hung up.  On to the next person to scam.

I have heard of this in the private sector but not people randomly calling house holds.
