Hi,

We are looking at moving to SCCM however most of our distribution points are Windows 2000 SP4 server. On the MS website it says that Windows 2000 isn't supported to perform site system roles. I am wondering if anyone out there has actually managed to use Windows 2000 systems as distribution points successfully?

Many thanks for your help.

Paul

I have tried it and it most definately does work. I've got over 100 of them.

You can't have them as branch distribution points, but other than that it works just fine.

If you have it working I would love to know how as I spent days troubleshooting this, did you upgrade from SMS 2k3 or start clean? Did you have any issues getting this to work? What work around did you have to do?

This was a clean install of ConfigMgr 2007. There's no workaround, it works the same as in SMS 2003. Make the ConfigMgr primary site server an administrator on the remte Win2K box and create the role. Distribute a package, watch the distmgr.log and see the negotiation taking place, the package is copied, the share is created. End of story.

You probably don't even need to add the ConfigMgr computer account these days, as you can specify the account to create the site system, but I used the computer account anayway IIRC.

Thanks very much John. I was starting to get a bit anxious but you have alleviated my fears!

Cheers.

I will try to re-test this in my lab over the weekend but for sure this is NOT going to be supported by MS. So every time you do an upgrade to SP or move to R2 you will need to test this within your lab to make sure that it still works. BTW are you SP1?

The infrastructure's not actually mine, it was just a project I worked on. As far as I'm aware they're still at RTM, I haven't tested this under SP1. You're right that it's not supported, but what it's doing isn't partiularly sophisticated so I can't see there being any problem under SP1 either. Interestingly this particular customer had an unusual approach to patch management (they didn't do any) so the servers were Windows 2000 SP4 with no hotfixes and it still worked just fine.
