I am running Windows XP Service Pack 3 on a Compaq Presario 3400 SR1620NX Desktop PC with one DVD/CD-ROM Drive installed but Windows explorer shows two devices. It shows CD Drive (D:) and DVD-RW Drive (Z:).

In device manager the DVD/CD-ROM Drives shows just the HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B device and in Disk Manager only one shows up as expected and appears as CD-ROM 0 DVD (Z:)

If I use Easy CD and DVD Creator 6 (Roxio Creator Classic Version 6.1.1.7) to burn or copy disks it works without any issues. When I use my CD Ripper application to create Mp3’s the audio CD is not recognized. I also downloaded ISORecorderV2RC1 to see if I could create an Iso image of the media and it will not recognize the media either.

I am not sure if it is a hardware or software problem and any help would be appreciated.

Don

Are you sure the audio CD is good?  It sounds like you have two problems:  1) A phantom CD-Drive called D: and 2) your audio cd won't rip.  Is that right?

Yes the audio CD is good and can be played on my desktop and laptop. However my laptop does not have a writer. The real problem is how do I get rid of the phantom drive. It is not in Disk manager or Device manager.

Maybe reverse this process?

Thanks but I tried that already and it did not help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241257 However I did get the idea to create a VBS script to automate the process.
