Computer: eMachines W3629/ 2.4Ghz

I recently installed the following (optional) Windows Update, along with SP1 for Vista...

...Since that time, the "Photos" Screen Saver, which comes with Vista, has been really choppy and sometimes displays double. Unfortunately, I could find no uninstall for the new video driver that came via Windows Update and the URLs provided in the update information are totally useless. Searching Microsoft and TechNet for "20143750" was also useless. Since I installed SP1 right after the video card update, I have no desire to roll back to a previous System Restore Point--for fear of what horrible things it may do to the operating system.   Because I installed this update and SP1 at relatively the same time, I have no idea which one is the true cause. Reducing the resolution had no impact, either. The monitor driver is a "Generic PnP Monitor" and I could not find a device driver specifically made for this monitor. My only refresh rate options are 59hz and 60hz and neither made any difference. I did download and install the most recent Intel video driver, to no avail...

Driver Version: 7.14.10.1461

Has anyone else experienced video performance issues since installing either this update or SP1? Any troubleshooting ideas would also be most welcome. If I figure it out, I'll post a follow up. I might start looking for a third-party picture show screen saver, too.

Video actually improved dramatically for me after applying Windows Vista SP1.  I suspect it may be the manufacturer driver, but don't know for sure.

The stinker is that eMachines only gives you an "Operating System Disc" when you buy the PC, which I believe equates to a hard disk image that you can use to totally "rebuild" your computer. (That's only really convenient if you want to roll the computer back to the way it was when you bought it.) I wish today's PCs would come with: (1) a disk image you could easily roll back to--for the technically challenged, (2) a "true" OEM Vista disc and (3) a CD of all device drivers. Then I could have easily reinstalled the original Intel driver from the factory shipped CD.

On another note, the eMachines downloads website does carry an older Intel driver, which it states is the original...

Intel Video Driver

Driver Date: 3/6/2007
Driver Version: 7.14.10.1227

Installing the above driver didn't make a difference, either.

Interestingly, booting in safe mode actually changes the way the screen saver displays images. Instead of fading pictures in and out or panning them on the screen, it reverts back to a behavior similar to the old Windows XP "My Pictures Slideshow" screen saver--and simply flips through the pictures without any effects.

Using Windows Vista's Resource Monitor, I decided to do an experiment... I let the Windows Vista "Photos" screen saver (PhotoScreensaver.scr) run for 30 minutes and used Resource Monitor to determine the screen saver's average CPU time. Over half an hour, it used 30% of the CPU. I then copied the "My Pictures Slideshow" screen saver (ssmypics.scr) from my old Windows XP computer to the Windows Vista computer, configured it to use the same pictures folder, and let that run for 30 minutes. The "My Pictures Slideshow" screen saver from XP only averaged 10% CPU utilization and ran flawlessly. It all makes me wonder what's so special about the Windows Vista's picture slide show screen saver that it needs to devour 2/3 more CPU.  Regardless, I'll probably just continue to use "My Pictures Slideshow" on Vista and be done with it. *Sigh*
