One interesting thing, when I picked the new Windows Firewall control panel applet, it warned me I couldn' t use it without enabling the service - perhaps a change of heart by MS?

Still investigating.....

Status: offline 		I have upgraded 15 machines so far, ranging from XP Home no SP to XP Pro SP1 and all the latest hotfixes.

I have only had one issue...which happened to be my main home system with all my stuff on it. I was a little worried that I would have to reload the system. However, after taking a break for about an hour, I came back to the system to start digging.

Here is what I experienced with the one issue:

After I loaded SP2, and rebooted, the system started back up and then the BLUE SCREEN of Death appeared with a stop code of 0x50 (Invalid Page Fault).

After thinking it was my Nvidia 5900 Ultra, I removed the video card and put in a cheap ATI 8900 card and still experienced the Blue Screen. So I thought I' d start removing items one at a time...first I decided to remove my SATA devices (DVD and Hard Drive) rebooted, and everything came up correctly...

So I jumped out on to Abit' s site (Motherboard is a NF7-S) to see if they had any newer drivers than what I had...of course not yet. So my PC is working great, I just don' t have access to my secondary DVD player or some of my music, but I can live without them for the time being.

I will try to uninstall the SATA drivers within Windows and let Windows " re-discover" them after it reboots later today.

I' ll post my results back here as soon as I can.

Status: offline 		I created a slipstreamed unattended install for XP with SP2 and upon completion of a fresh installation, clicking on the " Windows Firewall" control pannel gives a message about the service not being active and do I want to start the service. Every thing I had heard said this was going to be turned on by default, but it wasn' t in my case. Saying OK to starting the service opens the control panel as expected and the function is turned on at that point. It is left on after subsequent reboots.

I am going to have to try this a few more times to figure out what is going on.

Status: offline 		We have an issue with the new version of Internet explorer and our Nokia NSAS SSL based port forwarding portal.

All of the upgraded XP machines can no longer connect to machines on our network using the port forwarding java applet.

What should happen is that a user navigates to the https site then authenticates. When this has completed the user clicks on a hyper link which launches the java applet and starts a secure tunnel to the terminal server via a loopback ip address (127.0.0.5). Then the user connects to the terminal server via the RDP client.

It all works fine until the user tries to connect to the remote machine via the port forwarding using the RDP client. This occurs even when the firewall is disabled.

Curious...

Status: offline 		Has anyone tried out the new ADM files to set up a group policy to control the firewall? When I load it in to GPMC 1.0.2 on my Windows 2003 server, I get a slew of string length error messages and then certain items for the firewall config don' t appear (such as ones where I specify a list of approved applications and ports to open up in the firewall).

Am I the only one? If you have it working successfully, what tools are you using?

Status: offline 		How does one control the new features without AD or Group Policy? I cannot get poledit or any of the adm files to load with it. How do you customize the sp to turn off the firewall by default, or turn off pop up cop, or remove movie maker, etc.......I don' t want to accept all M$ defaults when I install this SP but I cannot see how to control it with an NT 4 server environment..

Status: offline 		We send some status logs into an FTP when a startup script has needed to do some modification to the system. It appears that FTP activity is blocked by default and as such our Logs do show up but with 0 content.

Status: offline 		I looked through KB 842933 for the problem with opening up the new ADM files in GPEditor.

The problem identified fits with what I' m experiencing, but only lists a hotfix for Windows 2000 SP4. Since I' m using Windows Server 2003, it may not apply.

I' ve opened a case with Microsoft Premier on this. I' ll reply back once we have a resolution.

When I run SAP Client it appears to run fine except for one transaction called Trip that is actually an HTML based transaction that displays through the SAP GUI. Trip returns a blank page. No change when I disable the Windows Firewall. No change when I change all the IE security settings to enable or prompt for everything (low Security for everything)

Status: offline 		We' ve had a similar problem after we applied some hotfixes the problem was that RDP tries to connect to the local machine if " remote desktop" is activated on the client. The solution so far has been to manually deactivate " remote desktop" on the client before connection and then reactivate it on disconnect fronm the server. I guess this could be done through registry scripting.

Status: offline 		The fix mentioned in KB article 842933 is available for Windows Server 2003. This did fix all of my Group Policy editor issues with the ADMs from Windows XP Service Pack 2.

So, on my Windows Server 2003 box, I have installed the Group Policy Management Console 1.0.2 (downloaded from MSFT). I then received the hotfix for 842933 from PSS for Win2003 and applied it. No reboot required (as long as you don' t have any GP editors open). It was able to open the ADM file without errors and all version 5 items are now visible.

Status: offline 		I have been looking at SP2 since the beta in January. The documentation is not fully up to date yet on the new settings and tools. Looks like some of the support files will not be available until the end of August.

We are planning a phased roll out starting in 2Q next year and pounding on it from September until March to find all the issues.

Yeah, installed it to help combat an outbreak of the SDBot n variant virus at work, and my SMS console broke down... = )

If you could link to info on the fix, I' d appreciate it as I haven' t found it yet.

Status: offline 		Installed on IBM netvista at work with WinXP SP1 and all current patches and went fine. Went home and installed on home machine on a clone ASUS p4p800e system board and on reboot system froze at the Windows XP logo screen. It appeared to freeze in the same location every time. I then installed WinXP Sp1 into a new different directory and got it configured. I did not install any thing other than the OS (i.e. No vendor drivers, etc...) Just the OS. I then installed SP2 and rebooted and recieved the exact same problem. Still need to go through and remove all periph. and try again. Just be wary

Status: offline 		What did you have to do to resolved the known issues with SMS 2003? I have installed KB832862 on a Windows XP SP1 machine, then upgrade to SP2. I then get advertisements, but only until I reboot the device. After a reboot, attempting to run an advertised program results in a " Cannot run Program - This program is currently not available" , and a refresh of the Machine Policy Retrieval renders a " This action could not be initiated" .

If anyone can assist, I would appreciate it.

Status: offline 		I created the netfw.in_ file and placed it within the extracted SP2 Network installation. ( the ic and ip folders) Installed SP2 and viola Explorer wouldn' t even start. Access Computermanagement through the task manager and the event logs were full of DCOM errors. Had to add " Everyone" group to the local Administrators group just to get the machine to boot completely into windows. Does anyone have any idea which DCOM permissions were " Locked Down" as part of SP2?

I was checking out what info a user might get if they tried to uninstall it.

Status: offline 		I want to install SP2 at the same time I update the local copy of i386.

When I run XPSP2.exe /X:C:\Windows\ I get the extraction okay but it ends with a message box about successfully completing the extraction.

Does anyone know a switch combination that would hide the progress window and suppress the last message.

Status: offline 		KB 884130 lists Virtual PC versin 2004 as having issues with XPSP2 when running an XPSP2 virtual OS on top of the XPSP1 OS. There are no other details.

Does anyone here know what kinds of issues there may be?

This is an excellent resource on deploying SP2 and discussed how to tweak it using NETSH and other methods.

You might need to register for the virtual lab, and the best part of the deal is IT IS FREE. There are other labs for AD/SMS/EXCHANGE/Security you name it ..

Status: offline 		My baseline studies show that SAV 8.0 is not getting updates. The only event log entry that appears to apply is a security notice that LSASS.exe was denied for listening to port 2585 for traffic.

Status: offline 		Found a utility from MS that should help identify what is going on with the ports in XPSP2.

Product is called Port Reporter and is defined in article KB887411. There is another product called Port Report Parser KB884289. Still trying to figure out how to make them useful.

Status: offline 		I had lots of problems with SP2 but I was affraid to upgrade to Vista since I heard its even worst... Recently I found a great tech support site that help me deal with those problems Here is the page for Windows XP Support
