Hi,

Can services packs be deployed via the OSD State Restore option ion SMS?

I've been trying to get XP SP3 deployed to brand new builds via the State Restore section in the software program. The idea behind this is the desktop is up to date before any user gets their hands on it. The package and advert have been created.

The first attempt was via a Software Distribution Program - but nothing ran on the desktop.
The second attempt was via a Connect to UNC and then run a custom batch file, again nothing ran. The software package was updated, the distibution  points updated, a new Image installation cd created and finally RIS updated. But there seems to be no attempt from the desktop to run the package.

Any ideas as to why?

Thanks

have you checked the BDD logs to see if there are any references to the SP3 install or issues it may be having?

Various logs checked but nothing jumping out as the error. Any particular log files that should be given more attention?

First, make sure you're not trying to install it on a pre-SP1 machine. Then I've got to ask... Wouldn't it just be easier for you to install in on your reference machine prior to capturing it? I'd suggest making a new WinXP .WIM file...

Defo not a pre SP1 build. Current build is XP SP2, just needs this additional SP to bring it up to date.  Yes, quite right, a new build has been created, capturedand added into WSD. It did cross my mind while troubleshooting but thought the forum may have a fix.
Cheers!

Sibot,

Your first step was the correct one to use. If you already have XP SP3 as a defined and tested package/advertisement (test on a predeployed PC), you just add it as a Software Distribution Program in the State Restore step. You will also need to make sure that the program is set to run whether or not a user is logged on (in Program Properties). This tab should be set as the following:

Program can run: Whether or not a user is logged on
Run Mode: Run with administrative rights (Do not check any of the check boxes in this section)
Drive Mode: Runs with UNC name

If you still have an issue respond and I'll assist as I can. US (Central Time)

Hi Iscapa,

Thanks for the feedback . Yes, the SP3 has already downloaded been packaged up, and installs OK via collections.  It's also been set up in the State Restore section as a job to install the software. As for your suggestions :

Program can run: Whether or not a user is logged on - Yes, this is set correctly.
Run Mode: Run with administrative rights (Do not check any of the check boxes in this section) - Yes, this was set correctly but also "Allow users to interact" was ticked. This has now been changed.
Drive Mode: Runs with UNC name - Yes this is set correctly.

Will update the package and DP's and give it a try. What seems odd is that the SMSDeploy.xml file does refer to the package but seems to bypass it completely when running (i sat and watch a pc build). The jobs after it run OK ?!?!?!

Sibot,

THe problem then is not nessesarly in the SMS deployment portion. You will need the debug logs to see what is happening behind the scene with OSD. In your sms/osd folder there are two files that start with osdshell. One is .exe and I the other is .LAB. Rename osdshell.exe to osdshell.prod and then rename osdshell.lab to osdshell.exe. This will enable the OSD log folder to be left on the local machine after it is deployed. I think if i'm not mistaken you'll need to recreate your OSD cd for the changed file to be included. You can then use these files to figure out whats going on with the package for SP3.
