ok... so I have almost 'sold' upgrading to SCCM to management... thanks to the OSD upgrade

but they want some clarification on wsus integration and I can't find any good documentation that isn't a bunch of just MS mumbo-jumbo

we have a wsus3.0 server running in our environment now... but i am not fully sure of what the sccm actually simplifies, changes, replaces.... or makes it easier to manage(!!)

I think they are looking to for something like "consolidating wsus and desktop/server patching"

but i need a little more meat than just that...

any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance

Shad

lol... yeah  i think they need a little more than "because hcortez463 said we should"

i just need to basically explain the benifits of this functionality, along with the how and why we should upgrade

Thanks again

ConfigMgr uses an installation of WSUS to download the updates catalog and deliver the catalog to clients so that their local windows update agent (WUA) can scan for applicable updates.  After that WSUS is out of the picture.  The caveat is that ConfigMgr takes control of the WSUS server completely and it cannot be used for anything else.  Clients do not report status to WSUS and all configuration of WSUS is done through ConfigMgr.  Windows Update Group Policies will interfere with thsi process so you should get rid of them after implementing a Software Update Point (SUP) in ConfigMgr.

we use group policy for everything here... mostly pushing software... which i am trying them to get away from, and people wonder why it takes so long to log in :-/

I mean sus is pretty easy to use, @ least our set up is, and i guess if it isn't broke why fix it... it downloads the updates, we approve them and it pushes them out (abreaviated version of course)   do you approve them in WSUS still or configmgr?

... so let me see if i am getting the gist of it...

1) since wsus sends the catalog to the clients, who scan themselves to see what patches apply... it saves on bandwidth
2) since clients report status back to configmgr... it can use this to create better reports, and further control when updates get pushed via maintence windows
3) configmgr becomes a central mgmt point for basically the entire organinzations deployment schema (ie deploy os, patches, and apps)
4) group policy will need to be scrutnized as to remove policies that will break the update processes

yea... ney?

any others... mgmt will eat this up... if i am right  =)

1) The scan is initiated by the ConfigMgr Client, based on your settings in the ConfigMgr console for that component.  Just wanted to clarify it's not "wsus" (technically) that's sending the catalog.  It's ConfigMgr leveraging the capabilities of WSUS' catalog, and the Windows Update Agent (the correct version) on the clients.
2) Absolutely; lots of reporting available.
3) Yes.
4) Yes.
