We are running advanced security.. system has been stable. central, 3 primaries, 300 secondaries.

We have an advertisement to install office 2007. The adv is base off of a collection which queries an AD group for computers, That query is set to update itself every hour.

Ad system group discovery runs every hour also.. Software inventory also runs every hours because of how our queries are set up.

Today i added some machines to a few AD groups and hmmm the collection never updates, even if i do it manually. 3 hours now and still nothing.

I have double checked my settings and nothing appears to have changed.

Any idea on what logs i should look at or something like that?
thanks

Well, you'll want to start with colleval.log. Although at the frequency with which you update collections, it's going to be big.
You may want to fire off a manual update and watch the log file.

WOW!!!! Ever hour for Software inventory!!!! WOW That is alot of overhead on your client PCs!!! I would re-write you queries to use Hardware Inventory at least! It has alot less overhead than SW inventory.

You should look at ESD, if you need every hour for AD discovery.

yea this is how it was when i came in.. been here for a month yet.

Most of our collection queries are written like....
Make sure that the machine does not have project 2007 in add\remove programs
Make sure that the machine is in the AD group uninet\blahblah
Make sure that the machine has Windows Installer 3.1 installed.

I am assuming that is why it happens every hour,, so that way the machine will bbe removed from the collection quickly.
Also, collection queries update every 15mins. Discovery happens every hour.

You are probably overloading your site server. Look for backlog in your inboxes and log files. IMHO that is WAY too often, and added a HUGE load the your site server and clients. I would rethink how you are deploying software.

I have no problem redoing it.. just having to train all the field support ppl on the differences.

I just fired up performance monitor on one of our primaries... 4 cpus.. 70% utilized. Disk spikes to about 80% about once a minute.

Another issue that has crept up.... Machines receive the advertisement... I check it an hour later using sms client center.. Says that it is downloading the source files, but it creates and empty cache dir and that is it.

This may be caused by how often you are refreshing the collection membership. Spend some time to work out what is the best way for your company.

  • Figure out how you are doing it now

  • Find out why it is that way.

  • Come up with a new plan

  • Test (in a lab)

  • Adjust production

  • Repeat the above steps

How many clients do you have?

From what i am seeing,, our setup of secondary clients is overkill.

We have a central.. 3 primaries under that, and then approx 50-75 secondaries under each of them.
Also besides the primaries... each secondary also functions as a local domain controller for that AD site.

6,100 clients

I agree this is too, aggressive.

If you must run AD discovery that often, then you MUST get ESD!!! It will be the best money you have ever spent! http://www.systemcentertools.com/esd2007.html

Yikes. I would start by scaling back on the discoveries. Settings things to a couple of hours surely isn't going to kill anything.
We do software and hardware daily, AD every four hours, and I'm beginning to think THAT is overkill.
If you're not using any monitoring on your Central Site server, I'd look at diskperf counters. I'm wondering if thrashing isn't just bringing collection updates to a crawl.
