Up until now I have only had a need for main site, I need to roll out Office 2007 and need to create distribution points.  From what I read all I need to do is go into console and add a server as a DP.

I tried to do this manually (right click NEW SERVER from SITE SYSTEMS, then checked DP) and then assigned a small package to the DP but the share SMSPKGx$ never appears.  (I do not want the PKG share on the c drive so I did drop down the no_sms_on_drive.sms file on the root)

do I need to install this server as a secondary site - or is it possible to work JUST as a DP without being a secondary site?

do I need to manually create the share?
from what I read - it is supposed to create the share automatically.

Three part question

what advantages would I loose if I did it manually?
best practice is to add it as a secondary site and check DP on it?
other than BITS what is recommended for DP?

thanks for your help.

-if your referring to server share, you would loose network throttling and package compression. (main things i think)

-yes it you have the resources, i would install a secondary site with the DP.. make sure your boundaries dont overlap thougth.

other than BITS what is recommended for DP?
- you should find all you need in the link bellow but you need IIS, WEBDAV, BITS enabled on the server.
