Some drivers like chipset or VGA has an EXE file and no separate inf file.

how to get the inf file from the exe file itself?

What is the manufacture of the computers you are trying to extract for?  I know HP's drivers you can go to cmd prompt and type   spXXX.exe -e    and it will allow you to extract the files to a folder you want.  Or you can use the HP SSM download manager and it will allow you to extract them.

Now other exe you can try in a cmd prompt name.exe /? To see if it will give you a list of commands that will allow you to extract the files.  You can also try WinZip and see if the EXE will allow you to extract it.

The other option is to use an application like driver magician that will give the list of drivers on that machine and let you extract the inf files.  This is very hand if you have new models in your environment and are unsure of what inf files you need for SATA HD, NIC, and Video.

Adding to what kodiak_da_bear said.... For some Intel chipsets you'd use...

Self-extracting .EXE distribution: INFINST.EXE -a -a -p <INF Extract Directory>
Example: INFINST.EXE -a -a -p c:\extract\INF

Compressed .ZIP distribution: SETUP.EXE -a -p <INF Extract Directory>
Example: SETUP.EXE -a -p c:\extract\INF

If you have problems with a specific one, try posting and someone can probably help...

Ultimately, it depends on what the manufacturer used to package the driver files into the EXE as there is no shared standard way of doing it. Dig through the documentation, call the vendor, run the exe with a /? like kodiak suggested, or post here like Rick suggested. There is no universal answer though.
