SMS Agent Host Will Not Start - Monday, March 15, 2010 11:09 AM
0
I have a Domain Controller that is configured as a Secondary Site Server/DP.  The SMS Agent Host crashed and will not start.  When I attempt to start it, I receive the following error: "The SMS Agent Host server on Local Computer started and then stopped.  Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do..."

The following services are running on this server:

SMS_EXECUTIVE
SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER
SMS_SITE_VSS_WRITER

Also, I do not see a "Site System Status" folder under this Secondary Site on the Parent Server's Site Status console.

Any help on this is appreciated.

Thank you.

Short term work around - remove the client and add it back (ccmsetup /uninstall).  When you reinstall, you might want to use the switch on ccmsetup that's resetkeyinformation=true

It won't allow me to uninstall the client agent.  I try it and it is looking for a different GUI ID than what my other servers have for their client agent.  I pointed it to my secondary server's client .msi and it still will not uninstall.  Also, here is what is in the CCMExec.log file when I try to start the SMS_Agent service:

The DC is Windows 2K3 (as are my SCCM central and secondary servers).  The version of SCCM is Advanced Client.

Does the SMS Agent start with the SYSTEM account? Also, what version of ConfigMgr are you running? SP1? R2? SP2?

R2 for sure.  Not sure about SP1 (I inherited the environment) - what is the easiest way to tell the SP?

Thanks!  R2 is NOT INSTALLED on this Secondary Server.  This is one of about 3 in my environment that do not have R2 installed.  The rest have it installed.

I also tried reinstalling the client on this server last night and found the following in the ccmsetup.log:

GetMPWebsite: Failed to get MP Web Site.

This server is the default MP for this site.

Will the problem with the SMS_Agent Host affect client ability to talk to this server as a MP as well as receive software packages?  This site is not protected and I configure my packages to allow clients to download packages from other DP's but the clients in this site don't seem to be doing that.

Finally, this server has SQL 2000 installed, which might explain why R2 is not installed on this server.
