nwilliams587 -> SMS_Executive wont start (6/7/2005 11:01:05 AM)

On one of our Secondary site servers the SMS_Executive Service wont start. This server has been up and working fine for about a year. The server has been rebooted and still getting this error in the event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7009
Date: 6/7/2005
Time: 7:52:16 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SMSSEC
Description:
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER service to connect.

When I try to start if from Services I get:
Could not start the SMS_EXECUTIVE service on SMSSEC.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Any ideas?

I have a few suggestions:

Background info, whats changed? Did new security patches get installed? Are the any event log errors leading up to this failure?

1) Are there any crashdumps in the SMS\logs folder
2) Check the sitecomp.log and smsexec.log
3) Any Dr Watsons/memory dumps?
4) Are the inboxes clear or backlogged with files?
5) Normally reapplying the SMS Service pack will remove and reinstall the SMS Services, clearing any corruption in the exisiting services and file structure.

Can I just re-apply the Service Pack? Wont setup tell me that the version is already installed?

brogers -> RE: SMS_Executive wont start (6/7/2005 5:29:13 PM)

id try a site reset? (just rerun setup and dont change anything)

linus -> RE: SMS_Executive wont start (6/7/2005 5:49:21 PM)

Yes you can reapply the service pack from the setup choose upgrade from the service pack source files.

Reapplying the Service Pack will remove and reinstall the SMS Site component manager.

I don' t think a site reset will remove the services but will refresh SMS and allow you to change the site server connection account...

A siterest is always advisable before reapplying the service pack, but in this case if the problem calls for removing and reinstalling the Site Control Manager Service, Reapplying the service pack is the way to go.

A SR does indeed reinstall the services as viewed in the sitecomp.log

nwilliams587 -> RE: RE: SMS_Executive wont start (6/9/2005 1:35:23 PM)

I tried a site reset first but it did not complete coming up with a message which said something like " Could not Start Site component manager" so I tried reinstalling Service Pack 1 which seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks for all the help!

We seem to have developed the identical symptom, also on a secondary site that has run for some time with no such issue.  Possibly coincident with upgrade to Symantec BE 11d.
You indicate reapply SP1 fixed this for you: was that SMS SP1 or the OS SP1?
Thanks.

nwilliams587 -> RE: RE: SMS_Executive wont start (3/22/2007 11:08:01 PM)

It was SMS SP1

jkantner -> RE: RE: SMS_Executive wont start (3/23/2007 8:45:00 PM)

Thanks.  We're at SMS 2003 SP2 now, but reapplying it appears to have fixed our problem site as well.
What seems to be in common is a BE 11 installation.  I gotta find out what that is doing to undercut the SMS site server services.
Thanks again.

yep, I just had this same issue with the sms_executive not starting and i reapplied the service pack 1 for sms 2003 and all was beautiful.

thanks

The exact same appear to have happened on one of my Secondary Sites, also running that version of Backup Exec. Can someone please go through what they did to fix this? You said reinstalling the Service Pack? On the primary site?
I'm on SMS 2003 SP3 now. Thanks.

jkantner -> RE: RE: SMS_Executive wont start (5/9/2008 10:11:23 AM)

Nope.  Reinstall the SP (SMS SP3, in your case) on the secondary site where the service won't start.  That has fixed it about 5 times in 5 tries for us.  I haven't taken the trouble to chase it through, but I expect there is some DLL in common between SMS and BE.  BE can use SMS's version, but not vice versa.

lwalsh -> RE: RE: SMS_Executive wont start (5/9/2008 10:49:45 AM)

Thanks jkatner. Will give that a try. My colleague who looks after Symantec BE also noticed some oddities with the backup logs. We've another Secondary site which requires upgrading BE to 11d. Any thoughts on how to this do this? (apart from not doing it![;)])

jkantner -> RE: RE: SMS_Executive wont start (5/9/2008 11:05:35 AM)

Our secondaries are typically multi-purpose boxes, so I don't usually have the luxury of telling site ops not to install / upgrade BE.  In your seat, I'd expect the BE upgrade to break it, but expect the SP3 reinstall to fix it.  So when I know in advance, I'll be sure to pre-stage the SP3 upgrade.exe (the big, fat 150mb thing) local on the secondary, then check in on the box soon after the BE upgrade, more or less expecting to have to fix it.
Good luck.

lwalsh -> RE: RE: SMS_Executive wont start (7/22/2008 10:03:59 AM)

Hi. SMS 2003 seems to be working fine on our Secondary site since the SP3 reinstall. However, Symantec backup exec has been very erratic. Particularly, running much slower backups for similar amounts of data.

As the two products seem to have seem issues here, would anyone have seen this, and found any solutions for this?
