mboone588 -> Searching the SMS Admin Console (4/24/2007 5:50:15 PM)

I started a new job and took over an existing SMS infrastructure.  When opening the Admin Console, I saw well over 100 packages, seperated into over 20+ folders.  The naming convention is inconsistent.

Is there any way to right click on Packages and do a wild card search for part of what might be the package name, without drilling into each folder doing a manual search?  It's taking way too long to locate things in the console, as advertisements and groups follow the pattern above.  Suggestions?

Suggestion:  go grab this.  It's the vbscripts from the book, "SMS 2003 Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach".  You'll want the script 4-3.  Edit line 1 to change <SMSServer>  to be your SMSServername, i.e.,  "MyServerName"

Then at a command prompt, run
cscript "Path-to-the-script\4-3_EnumPackagesAndFolders.vbs" > c:\whatever.txt

Open up whatever.txt in Notepad, and search that.

PS:  Buy that book if you don't have it yet!  I refer to it all the time.

Thanks.  Looks like a viable workaround for my problem.

As for the book you mentioned, I bought it just last week, but haven't had time to dig in.  Guess I better make some time for reading!

You could also see those packages in web reports.  Look under the "Software Distribution - Packages"

I put together an HTA to help with this that you might check out...

http://www.smsutils.com/CommunityDownloads/tabid/58/Default.aspx

Download the one named "SMS - Find Paths to Objects in Console". It lets you put in either the name or ID for adverts, packages, and collection and will return the path to it.

The HTA named "SMS - Get Collections Adverts or Packages" might be useful for you as well. It is pretty simple....just returns info on all records of whatever object type you select. Might make it easier for you to identify what is out there..

Matt!  Thanks for that .hta  I was just thinking about modifying the script to html/hta for internal use (we have lots of folders/subfolders for packages, too); and now I don't have to--your .hta is much better than anything I could have done.

Thanks Matt.  I saw a few additional downloads on that link that will be very useful.  Good stuff.

Glad they are useful. I actually just re-uploaded that HTA this week because I found a small bug in it that I wanted to fix. And I made some improvements on Monday to the one that just dumps the data about adverts, colls, and packages so they returned more info.

So, good timing on needing something like that. :)

The free "SMS Console Additions" also have search facilities build in for "Packages & Collections" as well as lots of other "right click" stuff.
