When following the online documentation on installing the SCOM Gateway, all was well until I tried to approve the new Gateway. The command:

"C:\Program Files\System Center Operations Manager 2007>Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.GatewayApprovalTool.exe
/ManagementServerName=<mgtsvername.domain.com> /gatewayname=<gatewayname.dmzdomain.com> /action=create

Results in:

"The gateway name already exists as a computer instance."

I am getting Event ID 20000 on the Management Server and Event IDs 20070 and 21016 on the gateway.

Any ideas?

You will need to remove the computer name from the MT_computer table. The supported method of doing this is to delete from the admin console. Have a look in the database and see whether that machine exists in the MT_computer table already.

if it isn't listed in the console as a managed machine then it gets slightly more complicated...

This software is reliable with scom or mom as well.
