quadman -> DP changing smspkg shares (4/8/2008 2:24:59 PM)

we have a distribution point that is moving packages between drives.  it first created a smspkgf$ share and then moved to smspkgg$ deleting the smspkgf$ share and all it's packages.  Is there a way to control this behavior?  In 2003 the documentation states that a second share would be created if it's out of space.  Is that the same here, that the original drive ran out available space, or what causes this to happen?  I tried to look in log files, but it looks like the logs got overwritten.

SMS uses the drive with the most percentage free space so if F drive has best space it creates smspkgf$ and then if g becomes top then it creates smspkgg$ etc. I agree its a nuisance. What I do personally is to set up a directory called SMS Packages on my prefered drive and share out as smspackages$. I then go into site systems and remove the default DP and then create a new server share for smspackages$. What happens then is that you'll find packages create under smspackages$\smspkg\sitecode001 etc. etc. The good thing with this is it is always exactly the same from site to site so you might have a script or something and you know it will always be in the same share location. Plus it makes it easy to move the whole directory if you add disks to the server in future

You should be able to specify the drive by modifying the Software Distribution properties inder your site config.  There is a setting for Location of stored packages that you can set to a particular drive letter.  Should be in the same place where you specify the Network Access Account.  (Sorr I dont have my SCCM console in front of me)

On a side note, I always create my DP's as server shares so that way I can for sure control where the code is going and I can move the DP quick and easily if ever needed.  ;)

That setting your referring to didn't seem to work for me, that was the first thing i did when i created my distrobution point was to set it to a specific drive letter. The package shares went to every other drive except for that drive... (probably the least free space %, but still plenty enough).

That share idea seems like a good tip though.

you can also use the old no_sms_on_drive.sms text file. just create a an empty text file and name it that. Then put it on the drives you don't want SCCM to use as share drives.  One other thing about SCCM is that when it chooses a different drive with more disk space, it's also based on the size of the distribution package as well. So, if you send out a package that is 200MB, CM will use the drive with at least 200 mb free. If your one drive is 250mb and another is 300mb, it'll pick the 300. However the next 200 mb package you send, it will put on the 250mb drive. Once you're too low on free space, it will no longer offer that DP as avaialble  because there isn't enough disk space to store it on. In the event none of your DPs have enough free space, the process stops altogether.
