simulacra75 -> Losing my mind.. ZTI failing (4/10/2008 12:59:43 PM)

OSD is going to drive me to drink! It's so frustrating when it's not working correctly. Basically I got rid of all of my OSD, MDT setup from the last 3 weeks and decided to start from scratch. I've gotten to the point where I'm attempting to install a ZTI image to a laptop (its actually the same laptop that i created the image on in the first place and it fails with no apparent error code on the screen, the machine just reboots itself. Below is an excerpt from my OSDInstallCD.log. BTW, I have checked that there's no MININT folder on the C:\ drive of the target machine, the security event logs of my Primary Site server show that my connection has been successful, I've been able to browse the directory structure "manually" (hitting F8 during Windows PE boot).

Any ideas???

I had the same issue when I first started working with ZTI/OSD.  My issue was because when I updated Windows PE on the SMS server I was pulling it from a network drive.  When copying from a network drive it does not copy over some empty directorys that are needed.  Copy over your source WINPE directory to a local drive when updating WINPE.

Good Luck!

Nope, not updating WinPE across the network, it's on the same drive as my MDT installation so that doesn't appear to be the problem

Make sure to use Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs) for your server entry in your CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini files.
Are you sure you don't have to add an LMHOST file in order for the machine to locate the server (if the server isn't on the same subnet you may need one)?
Is your username/password information correct - when you created the .ISO you used to burn your OS Image Install CD (make sure you updated all your DPS and made new a CD)?

Just some thoughts...

simulacra75 -> RE: Losing my mind.. ZTI failing (4/12/2008 3:15:36 AM)

I think i've overcome the above problem. Here's what i did, i copied all of the files from

\\<MY PRIMARY SMS SERVER>\OSD_ZTI_DP\WXPSP2\WINXPSP2
to
\\<MY PRIMARY SMS SERVER>\OSD_ZTI_DP\WXPSP2\

I then changed the installation program in SMS to reflect the path change to the various files needed for the Validation, Pre-Install, etc. The process definitely seems to progress further now but still fails, this time with the error 80004005 (i think) and the error message "package path not found" in the OSDInstallCD.log. Don't suppose anybody has thoughts on this "new" error? Many thanks...

You shouldn't really need to copy files around if you're using the MDT DPs as your source files for your SMS OSD process.

When you build your OS Image Installation CD within the SMS console, within the wizard there's a pane that asks for "Filename:". Check to make sure you put in "\\<MY PRIMARY SMS SERVER>\OSD_ZTI_DP\ZeroTouchInstallation.vbs" (the path to the upper level .VBS file and not the one in one of your lower level subfolders for the OS).

For example, I've got "\\MyServer\Folder1\SMS\OSD_ZTI_DP\WINXP\ZeroTouchInstallation.vbs" (for my XP image), but in that wizard I point it to the "\\MyServer\Folder1\SMS\OSD_ZTI_DP\ZeroTouchInstallation.vbs" script file which is one level up from where my OS's MDT DP files are stored.

Just something else for you to check...

Okay, still not working. Below i've created screenshots of the "properties" of my Windows XP DP from MDT, as well as screenshots of the actual directory structure on the SMS Share. Maybe somebody could have a look and spot where i'm going wrong? Thanks in advance....

More random things to look into...

Okay, so you've got an added folder level I didn't expect, so your "Filename:" path when building the OS Image Install disc should be "\\<MY PRIMARY SMS SERVER>\OSD_ZTI_DP\WXPSP2\ZeroTouchInstallation.vbs"

Did you double-check to make sure that you've got the needed share and NTFS permissions set for your "OSD_ZTI_DP" shared access? I'm assuming you do since it looks like it can read the initial .VBS script, but it can't hurt to quick double-check.

Have you tried updating your SMS console's WinPE (All Tasks | Update Windows PE) prior to building a new OS Image Installation CD? In case something is flakey there.

If you want to simply things a little you can change your "Network path" and "local path" and remove the "\winxpsp2" at the end. Then wipe out your DP contents and Upgrade your DP in the MDT console. This should rebuild it one folder level up. I don't know that this is really needed, but unless you're wanting that structure it might just be extra fluff.

Have you tried building an SMS advertisement for the OS image and advertising it to an existing client to see if that's all working fine? I'm leaning towards it just being an issue tied in with your OS Image Installation CD (but I've been wrong before)...

Okay, i'm not completely nuts, yet! I tried your suggestion of advertising the the package to an existing client and it has gone without a hitch from start to finish; joined the domain, installed an SMS package that I had assigned in the "Make/Model" section of the MDT Database, etc, etc. Thankfully i've done something right! I can only guess that you are correct in assuming that there's something wrong in my Installation CD setup or perhaps my Windows PE. What I'm wondering now of course is what, in the name of all that's holy, is wrong with my Install CD??

My eventual goal here was to get ZTI working in some shape or form and then develop this into an LTI type scenario where local admins could "cherry pick" some of the installation options. Any more ideas here? By the way, thank you so much for your help so far, it's been excellent

simulacra75 -> RE: Losing my mind.. ZTI failing (4/17/2008 10:36:04 AM)

I have a suspicion that the issue could be related to a WMI issue with Windows PE. Anybody know any way of checking that WMI is working correctly on my Windows PE CD?

simulacra75 -> RE: Losing my mind.. ZTI failing (4/25/2008 8:49:49 AM)

Okay, some more troubleshooting has been performed and i'm still really perplexed about this! I booted the laptop from my USB Installation "CD" and hit Ctrl+F8 so that nothing would run. Using the command window i manually ran the startnet.cmd file and all went well. I then manually ran "OSDInstallCD.exe /cdboot" (just as its typed in OSDshell.ini) and it works! The installation goes through the various steps, reboots into mini-setup, joins my domain, etc, etc and everything is perfect! Below are the contents of my startnet.cmd. Would anybody have any ideas as to why the process works if i type things manually, yet fails when attempting to run automatically??

@ECHO OFF
START "Installing Components" /MIN OC.bat
factory -winpe
regsvr32 /s netcfgx.dll
netcfg -v -winpe
net start dhcp
net start nla
net start lmhosts
