sounddoc -> WDS Server woes... (5/2/2008 12:02:51 PM)

Hi all,

I had to reinstall WDS today to fix an error that is seemingly undocumented (the service couldn't start because of an error 58 (0x3a)). After reinstalling, I've lost mixed-mode, and all my RIS functionality which our techs still use while I am designing LTI deployment. Fortunately I pointed the PXE clients to start startrom.n12 in the OSChooser folder, and we can RIS again, but for my own means I can no longer boot into LiteTouch.

So my question is, to revert back to WDS in mixed mode, will I have to uninstall WDS, SP2, reinstall RIS, then upgrade back to SP2?

Thanks!

To answer your question, yes.  I had a similar issue when one of my server guys decided to upgrade one of my servers.  I had not installed ris yet and in order ot get it to use RIS I had to remove SP2 and then install RIS, reinstall SP2 and I was back to mixed mode.

I'm having some problems with this. I uninstalled SP1, reinstalled RIS (had to hack it as the installation over our existing reminst share was rebooting the server (!!!)). What I did to get it working was unshare the folder, renamed it, and then did a fresh installation. Once that was done, I stopped the service, named the folder back and re-shared and all was good.

Now, keep in mind at this point, this RIS structure is working on SP1, but has had WDS installed into it in the past. I upgraded to SP2, rebooted, and there was WDS. yay. RIS still works, but the problem comes when I try to Configure the server through WDS as I had the first time I set this all up. I get the following error:

An error occurred during the file installation phase of Windows Deployment Services setup. The installation has been canceled.

If I go through wdsutil, the output is marginally better, adding this to it:

An error occurred while trying to execute the command.
Error Code: 0xC1030141

Google either of these gave nothing. I tried removing the Boot, Images, and mgmt folder from the RIS share, but this didn't help either - I got an "Access is denied" error...weird b/c I would thin it would be the other way around.

Anyway, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm about ready to scrap LTI and MDT all together and just keep updating 21 old RIS images until retirement.

Fixed! not by anyway i'd recommend, but further hacks got it back:

I used filemon to see where the access denied error was coming from and found that WDS configures itself by copying files to the share, not the drive, i.e. "\\servername\REMINST\etc..etc..." I shared out REMINST with full permissions for everyone on the dummy "fresh" copy of REMINST, and the install only failed when updating the registry, but I noticed that the WDS mmc console now had my former images / boot images in it. progress... I then moved back to using my original populated REMINST share, restarted the WDS service, and voila....i'm back in mixed mode, everything working the way it was before.

Hopefully this will help someone along the way.

If anyone from Microsoft is reading, please please please make mixed, native and legacy modes in WDS an option!!!
