Trying to wrap my head around Software Updates in SCCM and I’ve run in to something rather annoying. Once I have created a Software Updates Deployment package, which is also advertised to a collection, how can I remove that package from the system? I have removed the package from the DP and then deleted it in the SCCM console (under Software Updates – Deployment Packages), however the updates are still set as mandatory on my client and also if I run any report that asks for a deployment package I see all packages that I have deleted. I am sure this is some oversight on my part but can’t seem to figure it out. I must say my initial reaction is that I liked managing software updates just like any other package (adverts as well).

Thanks in advance

How much time did you give after deleting the packages from the site before you had checked?

I deleted some 12 hours ago, and now for instance I look at the "Software Updates - Deployments that target a collection" report these deleted deployment packages are still show as targeting the collection. I thought it may have something to do with the duration set on the package so I created one with a duration of an hour, let it run on one cleint and then deleted it after the hour was up. It's still showing up in on the reports. I am sure I am just overlooking something simple as I have just started with Software updates.

Is there no way to control the advertisements of software updates? I see software package advertisements, and even SMS2003 advertisements under deployment management, however nothing to correspond with software updates.

Thanks for any info on this trivial litte issue.

Hmm deployment packages vs. deployments. Will need to qrap my head around that tommorow.

Yeah - figuring all of this out can be a head-ache:

Removing the package will not stop the updates from being made available to the client.  You will need to remove the "Deployment".  Think of it like this:

Updates List:  Just a list of updates that you want to group together logically.
Updates Package:  The actual updates after they have been downloaded.  This is the actual bits.
Updates Deployment:  This is an instruction set that tells the clients what updates to install.

Taking away the package doesn't remove the instructions for the client.  You need to remove the "Deployment" if you don't want the clients to see the balloon.

Thanks for the reply - I think I'm close to having this all sorted out. Since my initial post I have come across the SCCM 2007 Software Update Management Guidance - Migrating from SMS2003 ITMU. This article has been an invaluable primer on this migration; a must read for everyone making the change.
