mclark958 -> GatewayApprovalTool for Management Servers (5/8/2008 12:41:04 PM)

After MMS 2008, I was able to finally come back and get a full management group up and running consisting of an RMS and many Gateway servers in different DMZs.  Thanks to the excellent session by Pete Zerger, I was able to do this very smoothly.  After I had set everything up, though, I chose to add an additional Management Server to my management group.  The intent is to have Gateways and Agents connect the new MS as a primary and the RMS as a secondary.  The question is this: do I need to run the GatewayApprovalTool on any MS in the management group?  I tried this once after reading a Microsoft guide that noted this should be done.  When I ran the tool, I received a message stating something to the effect of "Gateway already exists." (since the approval tool had already been run on the RMS).  Does anyone have experience with this?

To avoid any confusion, as well as to minimize the time it takes for all MS to see the approval, I always approve my Gateways on the RMS. Then, in a matter of a few minutes, this should propagate to all MS in the mgmt group. If memory  serves, Ian mentioned waiting about 30 minutes after running the approval tool in large environments. In small to medium, I've never waited for more than about 5 minutes.

Remember, turn auto-approval OFF before approving the Gateway.  That way, if the approval fails to propagate, you will  see the GW appear in pending actions after installation, automatically making you aware of the fact before you go into a bunch of troubleshooting.

Let me know if this does not answer your question.
