we are using SCCMsp1 task sequence to zti build our machines. Everything works on dell gx620 machines, and 745 machines, but it does not work for dell 755 machines. The NIC driver is loaded into the boot wim.

the machine client captures the user settings and the comptuer settings (including the networking setting)
reboots into winpe
winpe loads the drivers for the NIC
zti build fails and reboots the machine back to the OS.

This error does NOT happen if the OS has a DHCP address.
If the OS has a static ip set, winpe loads the static ip settings, I can press F8 to bring up the command prompt and and I'm able to ping the ip address but not the FQDN of the sccm server or any other machine.

Does anyone have an idea on why static ips are not working but dhcp is working? IS there a way to just tell winpe to use dhcp to build the machine instead of using the captured settings?

Resolution of the FQDN happens from the DNS server.  You may need to check your dns settings on your static entry and verify how they differ from your DNS settings when DHCP assigns it.

DNS seems to be ok.

what is weird is I am unable to ping the machine by name even if i put the FQDN in.

i.e.   ping computername.domain.edu

This error only happens on Dell 755 machines that have vPro. It is very odd.

Do you happen to know how to always use DHCP in winpe instead of loading the static configuration?

I faced the problem with Dell optiplex 755 and the resolution was in wrong net card driver in WinPE I used XP then replaced to Vista driver the problem has gone.

hmm.. I'm pretty sure Im using the correct net driver. It is the same driver I load for vista.

I never really figured out how to get the silly thing to work, so instead I scheduled a command prompt to open and run the netsh command to set the local area connection = dhcp. This set winpe to dhcp and the build works as planned.

Once the vista wim is loaded, winpe loads the static address and everything works.

It's just really odd that the static doesn work for the initial winpe boot up.
