sconnell -> Reports not Correct (6/6/2008 11:37:52 AM)

could someone please help me understand why some of my inventory reports are not showing some PC's that I know have SMS installed. Also is there a way to manually refresh reports? We also have some discrepencay between what SMS and the actual Windows updates shows as missing updates. I have verified that thru the package it is current. An example would be say SMS shows its missing 2 updates, but when you are at the PC you run Windows updates and it shows like 12 missing updates. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/7/2008 1:55:18 PM)

SMS 2003?

Are you just running ITMU? or do you have the ESUIT running as well?

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/7/2008 7:11:02 PM)

SMS 2003, ITMU

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/7/2008 10:38:16 PM)

That is the problem, you need to run ITMU AND ESUIT on all workstations, otherwise you will not see what HF are needed on all WS.

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/8/2008 7:27:43 PM)

How do you run ESUIT, this server was setup by someone other than myself.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/8/2008 9:09:24 PM)

You can download it from here.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2C93DA1D-48A0-4E5C-991F-87E08954F61B&displaylang=en

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/8/2008 10:50:37 PM)

okay I downloaded but it looks like it creates a whole new package and advertisement for me to deploy. I'm a little confused as what this will do? I'm fairly new to SMS 2003 and still trying to understand all the verbage.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/9/2008 5:27:22 PM)

You need to advertize this to all of your clients and it will return additional HF that are required by all workstations.

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/9/2008 10:00:26 PM)

okay I have run that to one of my collections, I then ran the scan all systems but changed the scan to reflect that collection and i get failed to connect to WMI permission denied 70 if I trigger the software inventory scan on that PC.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/9/2008 10:05:45 PM)

You need to run Hardware inventroy. The WMI error is another issue, that you should look at.

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/9/2008 10:39:14 PM)

when i right click on the PC that is not showing up in my report inventory and run the trigger hardware inventory I get the same message failed to connect to WMI permission denied 70. Seems there are alot of issues regarding the WMI issue but yet to get any valuable info regarding on the fix. I have also tried to repair the SMS client with no luck as well.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/10/2008 7:41:55 AM)

Is the Server servers started? Error 70 translates to "The remote server has been paused or is in the process of being started."

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/10/2008 6:55:07 PM)

gjones, Please clarify, is the Server servers started?

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/10/2008 7:31:26 PM)

On the workstation with the WMI error, is the server service stated?

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/10/2008 8:51:34 PM)

gjones, Yes on the workstation that is not showing accurate results in my reports and giving the WMI 70 error the server service is started as well as the computer browser since it depends on that as well.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/11/2008 7:37:33 AM)

Can you connect to the workstations remotely using the UNC path \\<WS name>\c$ ?

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/11/2008 9:59:36 AM)

yes no problem

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/11/2008 10:12:50 AM)

Then I don't know why you are getting the WMI error.. By chance do you live in Canada?

jnelson993 -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/11/2008 1:55:50 PM)

What if you run this from a command-prompt

WMIC /node:YourRemoteMachine Service GET Name, State

If it works then we know WMI is running and you have permissions on that machine.  It should show all remote services and if they're running, stopped, paused, etc.

If it doesn't work, then the WMI service (winmgmt) isn't running on that machine or is paused or something.  Without WMI, SMS stuff no worky.

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/12/2008 9:47:43 AM)

gjones, No I don't. Also after launching ESUIT to all machines nothing has changed on my reporting still does not seem to be updating correctly.

jnelson, I have verified that the services are running. Also that errors out when I run that command

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/12/2008 9:53:16 AM)

You need to work on why you are getting that WMI error, once that has been clean up try running ESUIT again, force Hardware inventory to run then review the list of HFs that shows up within SMS.

jnelson993 -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/12/2008 12:22:57 PM)

Garth is right on.  Gotta figure out why you're getting the WMI errors.
  1. Look at the machine, is the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service (WINMGMT) running?
  2. Is the firewall blocking remote WMI?
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa389286(VS.85).aspx
  3. Is DCOM/COM set right
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa393266(VS.85).aspx

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/18/2008 2:44:26 PM)

Okay got the WMI issue cleared up, ran the ESUIT again on all machines. However the report reboot pending is still showing several PC's that need to be rebooted since like Feb. and I know for a fact those PC's have been rebooted but the report still shows them.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/18/2008 3:19:57 PM)

In the All Systems collections do thoes PCs show up twice?

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/18/2008 3:50:20 PM)

no they sure don't

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/18/2008 4:01:42 PM)

Force the hardware inventory to occur and see if it updates the data. If not look at this and find out where it breaks.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/19/2008 8:35:35 AM)

It look fine, why did you think it failed here?

jnelson993 -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/19/2008 8:46:39 AM)

Agreed, it looks fine.  Those warnings about "SMS_ActiveSyncConnectedDevice" and others not existing mean just that...those WMI classes don't exist on this machine, but it doesn't mean there's a problem.  Different machines/OS's have different stuff on them and the SMS_DEF.MOF may be set to inventory certain items for all machines regardless if they have the class or not.  I don't see any problems here.

Now, if there were other classes that you KNOW should be there but it's saying they didn't exist, like memory or chassis type or something, then we'd have to look to troubleshoot the client or WMI or something.  But as it stands right now I think you're fine.

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/19/2008 10:59:14 AM)

so after forcing the hardware inventory and verifying it took nothing has changed.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/19/2008 11:58:41 AM)

Did you follow the artilce to ensure that the data is making to the db?

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/19/2008 5:49:05 PM)

okay when I go to my SMS site server it could locate the PC in question in the mp_hinv.log but the next step mpfdm.log finds no entries for that specific PC name.

gjones -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/19/2008 6:02:57 PM)

You need to look for the MIF file name that you found in the step before hand.

Assuming that the client can talk to the MP and that not all clients are having problem then I would force a Full inventory to occur. Use Cory Becht tools to force a full hardware inventory to occur.  http://www.myitforum.com/articles/8/view.asp?id=7099

sconnell -> RE: Reports not Correct (6/19/2008 7:16:10 PM)

Is this what you were talking about when I view the mp_hinv.log file for that specific PC.  I am also currently running the force full inventory from the article you attached and will let you know. Thanks for your help.
