RayS -> Collect version info on specific DLLs (6/6/2008 2:57:09 PM)

I need to collect version information on certain, possibly orphaned, DLLs in my environment with an eye towards replacing those that are showing up as vulnerable to our scanning application.  How would I go about doing so?

At this point I've shied away from working with the MOF files due to the dire warnings that always accompany any instructions on how to do so, but it looks like I'm going to have to take the plunge.

No need to go to the mof, DLL and EXE version information (yes, the same information as when you right-click a file from explorer and look at the properties) comes in under normal software inventory.

(Forgive me if you already know this, I just want to be absolutely thorough)
From the SMS console, navigate to:
SITE DATABASE
  SITE HIERARCHY
     XXX- SERVER
        SITE SETTINGS
           CLIENT AGENTS
              SOFTWARE INVENTORY AGENT

Then click on the INVENTORY COLLECTION tab.  When you add (with the little yellow star) a new file type, it will tell the clients to start inventorying file existence and file version information for the filespec you specify.  After that the data will show up in reports or queries and you can create collections based on who has what DLL and what version.

Don't be intimidated by the mof.  We'll talk you through your first one (when you do decide to do so; which you don't need for these files in SW Inv)

Thank you both.  That's exactly what I was looking for John, and I'll certainly take you up on that skissinger.

One of these days I'll have the time to read my SMS books... one of these days... :)
