SMS console is connecting to Database but when you attempt to expand the Packages tree or Collections tree.  The console will sit at an hourglass, or after an exceedingly lengthy amount of time (15 minutes or more) you may get a partial list of items.

This is not the DCOM / SP2 compatibility issue.  Normally this console functions just fine.  Nothing has changed on the workstaion running the console or on the site server.  Additionally, when this occurs the Console on the Site server does not respond as well.  It almost appears as if there is something hanging up the process.

Any idea's troubleshooting this.  I have no errors in log files, and the initial connection appears to connect normally.

Thanks in Advance.

Does the user have admin class permissions or just something more limited?

Yes, they all have admin level permissions.

It's really weird.  The consoles will all work for a couple of days (maybe even a couple of weeks), and then out of the blue they all stop responding, including the local one on the Site Server.

I am starting to go down the route of possibly a rogue console, maybe an old SMS 2.0 console that is not used very frequently, but when it is opened, maybe it is locking something up???  I don't know.

What I would like to know is if there is any way to show each remote connection to DCOM or the SQL database at the time it happens, so I know who to go after.  The only thing I have right now are the Security logs on the sight server.

I'd love something that could tell me who is connected.

I know the console on my last Vista box could take down SMS.  I'd open something and it'd sit at an hourglass and I knew right then that it was shot, not just for me, but for everyone (and on the server).  I think I restarted WMI on the server to get it going again.  That Vista box eventually died and I never had the problem again.

That sounds exactly like what we are seeing.  All we have to do is reboot the problem workstation and everything will recover.  Problem is.... Finding the problem workstation.

Yeah, so if you don't have too many admins, maybe you could ask the first guy to see an hourglass to raise his hand ASAP by way of email so you can see who's causing it.

That is kind of what we are doing right now.  Just so you know, I also found that the remote connections do log a security event log message on the Primary site server. So if I see the issue happening, I look through the security logs and make everyone that had connected in the time it was broken reboot their machines.  LOL!  I know id sucks, but it gets my console back!

Thanks again!
