jbarthman -> Can't capture .wim file in MDT 2K8 (6/27/2008 10:38:29 AM)

Let me start by stating I have never used any MS deployment tools, so a lot of this is really new to me. I am attempting to capture a custom master XP image from a task sequence in MDT 2K8 and can't. I took a Ghost image of XP I had, turned it into a .wim, added it to my Deployment Workbench, and created a task sequence. When I boot to my PE disk, select this task sequence, then select to capture a .wim of it, it never happens. The task sequence seems to run through, reboots the machine, it seems to run through sysprep, reboots, and brings up a login screen. That's it. It won't capture the .wim at the end of the process no matter what I do.

I have created a .wim out of a full XP CD and attempted to do the same thing as above. This seems to capture a .wim at the end just fine. I can't figure out why this is not working. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I know that this type of process is not somthing MS recommends. They state the Master should be created from the source CD and all the little tweaks needed in the OS should come from scripting. I would like to do it this way but have no idea how to get all the changes into the Master that I currently have in that Ghost file mentioned above. Is there documentation somewhere that will explain this procedure? If anyone has any tips please share them.

First off, if you're using Ghost, why bother with other deployment technologies? If your .WIM image contains a Ghosted image, then legally you have to pay for Ghost licenses for anything you image with that image since it's got Ghost in it.

With that said...While I don't know if it will work or not, take a peek at the document here: http://www.myitforum.com/articles/8/view.asp?id=11032, looking at the tail end of the section about setting up and preparing the reference machine right before capturing it.

Then what I think you should be able to do would be able to Ghost a reference machine. Then go through it and tweak it and clean it up. Then kick off a manual capture process and capture it.

This is just off the top of my head so I could be wrong about it even working. Honestly, I'd either stick to Ghost, or set up a reference machine manually and then capture it if you're into heavy customizations...

You can give this a try...  http://lukenotley.wordpress.com/2007/05/20/bdd-2007-how-to-capture-a-reference-computer-image/
I captured an XP image by doing it.
