mfuszner -> Server & workstation on separate VLANs errors (7/3/2008 12:07:50 AM)

I have a WDS server set up and working for gathering and deploying images within the same VLAN. However, when I try to connect through a PXE boot from a workstation in a different VLAN, I get the message "Proxy DHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011". The WDS server is on VLAN 106. The workstation is on VLAN 102. My DHCP server is running on the Cisco Layer 3 switch that connects the two VLANs.

I have tried adding a helper address on vlan 102 pointing to the WDS server on vlan 106. I have also tried using "ip forward-protocol udp 4011" on my switch, and I have tried configuring options under DHCP as follows:

option 60 ascii PXEClient
option 66 ascii 192.168.18.25 (my WDS server's IP)

I am unable to configure option 67 on the switch (says it is not supported).

Any help would be appreciated!

The ip helper address is the way to go to forward the DHCP requests -- PXE network traffic emulates DHCP network traffic.  I suspect that having DHCP served up from the same switch that also has an ip helper on it is probably what is causing the issue; the switch won't forward the traffic because it is already servicing DHCP requests.  Given that the switch won't accept option 67, you are kind of in a bind at that point (note that normally you only configure the three DHCP scope options when WDS and DHCP coexist on the same system).

The big question is why are you not using a Windows DHCP server?  It would make a lot easier in many ways including solving this problem.
