I am currently running SMS 2003, but we don't do much with it.. we really use it for remote control and reporting.

We need to 'move' this functionality to new server hardware and upgrade it to SCCM.

Would you migrate the existing SMS, then upgrade or just perform a clean SCCM install?

Thanks!

If you have many custom collections or anything else then you might look at upgrading.  If you have no real investment with it, as you say, then I would format and start over.  I would recommend that you use a different site code when you do it.  You can now bypass some of the problems that come with anyupgrade.

Personally I like a clean start, avoid any issues from the moving and upgrading, and helps clean things up. But... it depends on how large your current system is, it might just take too long to rebuild all your packages, queries, and reports.

Just an FYI, the remote tools feature changed a lot since SCCM came out. You can no longer connect to a machine unless there is a user logged in. You have to enable RDP and do that.

When did this happen? Is there any way around it?

Since your usage sounds light; the best way would be a clean installation.

As far as the Remote Control piece…

You can extend the “Right Click” function on an object (Computer) in the Config Console to include custom actions.

In our environment, I have extended this to include a Remote Control package that I developed using .Net and a security enhanced TVNC mixed with UltraVNC. As long as the computer (SCCM client) is active and online, you can obtain a Remote Control session, regardless if the user is logged in or not.

Good luck with your upgrade.

Thanks for all the replies!

We have now ordered the software and are eager to perform a clean install with a slightly different site code.  There is very little customization we will need to do.

As far as the RDP 'issue' I understand that Microsoft is going toward the RDP method of remote admin, and that's fine.

We have configured Remote Assistance via Group Policy which will allow a remote assistance by certain Admin groups without user acceptance.  The Remote Assistance functionality removes VNC from our environment entirely!  yipee!
