dhite -> ComfigMgr site server on 2008 server (7/7/2008 4:20:30 PM)

My buddy Nick in Argentina has the following configuration which I am not able to duplicate because I do not have a 2008 server at my disposal.

Windows 2008 server
IIS 7.0
WebDav with the following: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc431377(TechNet.10).aspx
SQL 2005
SQL 2005 SP 2
Configuration Manager 2007
Configuration Manager 2007 SP 1

He is having problems getting the schema extended and his lab clients are getting an error stating automatic site code discovery was unsuccessful which is typical:

“I tried to install SCCM and did extadsch.exe and it did not create the log file and then I did the install anyway and then applied SP 1 thinking it would allow me to extend it but it did not so I installed it anyway. Then I tried it one time more and still does not extend it.”

My question is has anyone successfully installed a ComfigMgr site server on 2008 server?

Any suggestions I can forward to him would be appreciated.

I followed this and it worked for me.

Thanks but the only problem is that this approach apparently allowed him to extend the schema and Nick cannot:

I installed 64-bit Windows Server 2008 on a physical server and prepared it for ConfigMgr installation ie. installed SQL Server 2005 SP2,  extended AD schema, created System Management container, installed IIS7 etc.

I also see that the upgrade is not supported and I don’t know if a slipstreamed SP 1 version is available. So I guess he is high and dry.

Well you asked if anyone's installed SCCM on 2008, and I have, as have other people.

Is the 2008 box his domain controller?
Is he running AD in native 2008 mode?
AD can be run in 2008 mode, 2008/2003 mixed, or 2008/2003/2000 mixed mode.  My domain was 2008/2003 and it worked so maybe he can look at that.

Also, I couldn't find a SP1 silpstreamed DVD on MSDN two weeks ago.  Not sure if there's one now for download.  But as I said before, it can be done following that guide so the slipstream probably won't help him.

It sounds like a problem with his schema extension and has nothing to do with 2008 or ConfigMgr itself.  Turbokitty's questions are on track.  Additionally, where did he run extadsch?  With what account?  Is that account an enterprise admin and schema admin?

Also, review the extadsch.log located in the root of the system drive.

Is the 2008 box his domain controller?
Yes it is and it has all the roles on it in his lab.

Is he running AD in native 2008 mode?
I am not sure about this but I can ask him tomorrow. It is after working hours there now.

I also looked and there is no SP1 silpstreamed DVD on TechNet plus

As far as the extadsch.log file is concerned he said it wasn’t created.

I will keep you posted.

Nick is Running Windows Server 2008 as his functional level and said that he was going to blow it away and put 2003 server back on his lab server.

Update on Nick’s ConFigMgr issue:

Thanks to you Don for help with my testing lab. Tell the forum people thank you for the help too. I did all the problems myself. When I installed the server I copied the administrator and called it Nick and logged on with it to do the SCCM install. When you asked if I installed with rights I thought I did. I logged on as administrator and the schema extended and the log file was made. Then I reinstalled my clients and all works now.
