If you already own SCCM then R2 "should" be free for you.  It has always been that way in the past.  Cant imagine it would change, but cant say for sure.

I will be upgrading my lab next week with hopes of upgrading my prod server in a  few weeks.

You need to be an SA customer to get R2.

My Work has a Campus Agreement. I presume this is software assurance..?
