Hi, I have the following dilemma. My primary site (SCS) is located in our corporate office and besides of other roles it is also a protected Distribution Point for our corporate office. It works great.

Now I have another business location and let’s call it BEM that is connected by WAN/routers to our corporate office. I have setup a Distribution Point share on one of the servers at BEM thinking that if there is a local copy of packages for advertising, it will ease network congestion and download/install quicker on local clients.

However, that has not been the case. I tried pushing out Symantec Endpoint Protection client and 97% of the clients report “Waiting for content” in a report even after two days. Go figure.

Now I was convinced that if I setup a protected Distribution Point share, the clients will get their packages only from that particular Distribution Point share unless I specifically allow otherwise, correct?

Either way, I am now considering creating a Secondary Site at the BEM location. So I wanted to hear you recommendations. What would you do if you had a remote site over a WAN, would you use a Distribution Point share or make a Secondary Site?

Our organization is setup exactly like the way you're considering... a single central SMS primary server and about 70 full Secondary Site servers.  The primary server does not serve as a DP for any clients, but each Secondary Site is setup as a protected DP so that all software distribution happens without their own subnets and not across the WAN.

From your current setup, does your primary site (SCS) that's running the protected DP have the subnets included from your client networks?

Well, my primary site, which is also a Distribution Point includes subnets of our corporate office and many smaller locations that have no servers and are connected by WAN/routers.  Some that are located in Florida are using a Branch Distribution.
 
BEM, however, is one of our larger and more complicated locations. I am trying to figure out if Secondary Site would be a better option than just a Distribution Point share as far as performance, speed, and reliability are concerned.

I have a site that has 35 primaries.

One of the Primaries is seup with 75 PDP's all work without incident.  Sound like you have things setup right. Did you distribute the package to the remote DP?

If a client is waiting on content it usually means that the content is NOT on the DP. Di dyou check the DP and ensure that the package is present?

Also make sure that you protected both locations and that you have only the boundaries for that location on the PDP. Also makesure that you set the advertisement is set so that the Advanced Client tab is set to either download or Run from remote DP on Both Sections.

If in your boundaries the location is set to local for all boundaries it will not execute or download if you do not choose it in the advertisement.

There really isnt a need for secondary sites unless you are looking for more control of the location but in actuallity all Advanced clients report back to the central site anyway so why mess with the overhead if you dont need to.
