Hi! When deploying a machine with a task sequence and using "Download content locally when needed by task sequence", package source files that are downloaded during the task sequence are not kept on the machine, but removed after the install of the package is finished. The packages are also not downloaded to the normal client cache (c:\windows\system32\ccm\cache), but to c:\_smstasksequence\packages\<packageid>.
 
Is this how it should work? It causes us major problem, because if windows installer packages is installed during task sequence, the windows installer source files is not available if the programs need to repair. It is ok if the machines is connected to network because then we can use windows installer source list update, but we have many portable machines not always connected to network that need the source files locally.

When using Windows Installer packages, you should always define an alternate source path for repair functionality. You cannot rely on packages being kept in the cache of the client because they will be deleted in the CCM cache also if it runs out of disk space and requires to download a newer package. If your clients have enough disk space, I'd suggest to define an additional folder to store all packages that are needed after installation.

When you setup a package there is the Persit Client Cache Option. if you tick this the files will be removed from the cache after install if you leave it blank the files will remain.

Hi and thanks for the replies!

We have a very large cache and the clients have large drives, so we are pretty sure that the files will remain in cache and as mentioned, there is a way to persist the content in the cache if the packages where downloaded to the "real" cache during task sequence. Setting the "Persist content in client cache" does not affect packages that are downloaded during task sequence.
