sm850 -> Disaster Recovery Question (9/26/2008 7:35:49 AM)

Hi,

I've read the documents by Microsoft and it seems to say that you can only restore an SMS DB to a server with exactly the same OS. i.e. our site system is currently on 2003 Server Enterprise with SP1 (and subsequent updates) but we need to move it to virtual hardware and wished to build it as a 2003 Server R2 with SP2 and restore the SMS DB to that. Seems we cannot. At least not using Microsoft's method.

Am I right or is there another way?

Thanks :)

I don't know how much the R2 could cause a problem.  For paranoia, you might want to consider updating your existing box to SP2, and verify SMS works (dcomcnfg is the main thing you have to reset for the reporting point & slp (if it is an RP or SLP) following an SP install).  I'd consider doing that; and monitoring your SMS structure for a day or so to confirm it's healthy; then move it to the new one.  I've assumed you've already evaluated the pros and cons of having your SMS site on Virtual?  If you haven't heard the arguments for and against yet, you might want to start a thread on that topic.  I know it's possible and people have done it successfully, you just have to be aware of the potential bottlenecks so you can avoid any problems.

Good Point! I'll start a thread on virtual SMS :)
