jfraser174 -> Is this possible? Trying to make a query to exclude... (9/26/2008 10:16:04 AM)

Here is what I am trying to do.  I am looking to deploy software to a site but will have numerous random machines that i will be given here to exclude.  I created a collection and added these exclude machines to it using one of the "add computers directly to collection" tools out there.  So I want to creat the query that target the machines in the site I am deploying to and use a subselect name not in another query.  The other query would be just a client = 1 and limited to the collection I created for excluded machines.  It seems that the subselect doesn't care the the query it points to is collection limited.  It just see client = 1 and excludes all machines.

Anyone know if I can do anything differently to get this to work?  How do others handle excluding random static machines from large deployments?  I hate adding each and every machine individually to a query criteria.  It takes forever.

Thanks

If I understand correctly, this should work (borrowed from the sms email archive lists) no need to collection limit it, the subselect handles it.

This article explains its further http://www.myitforum.com/articles/1/view.asp?id=179

1. Create a collection where clients are to be excluded, i.e.  - "Excluded Clients"

2. Hunt down the Collection ID for the new collection named "Excluded Clients"
a. Youcan use the SMS report titled "All Collections" that lists the Collection Name and Collection ID.
b. Or, add the following switch to the end of your SMS console .msc: Properties | Target "/SMS:NodeInfo=1" (no quotes needed)   - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216242
You can then do Properties | Node Information on your new collection to get the Store Name or Collection ID (this is alot easier than 2a)

3. Create another collection and call it "Clients not excluded"
a. Membership Rules - New Query - Edit Query Statement - Criteria -Star Burst (Properties)
b. Criterion Type: Subselected Values
c. Attribute class:  System Resource
d. Attribute:  Resource ID
e. Operator: is not in
f. Subselect:  paste this into the dialogue box without the quotes
"select ResourceID from SMS_CM_RES_COLL_SMS1234" then change the SMS1234 to be the Collection ID from step 2 above.
g. OK all of the way out and Update Collection Membership and Refresh
