blockcipher -> SMS Unique ID (9/26/2008 1:59:16 PM)

Good Morning,

I was curious about how the SMS Unique ID works in the following scenario.

- Existing PC that has the SCCM Client and is able to get packages, etc.  Shows information in the database
- Then rename the existing PC to a different PC name.

Does it create a new entry in the database, or does it carry along and update the current record in the database.  Or do I end up with duplicate entries?

Also, if you RIS the PC does it get a new SMS Unique ID?

Just curious of how it flows and how the reporting will show it.

Thanks :)

Hi,
If you rename the machine, at the next discovery cycle the record in the ConfigMgr database will change name. The entry is tied to the ConfigMgr GUID, not to the machine name. You can track this through inventory history...

If you rebuild the machine, and don't take make the effort to migrate its ID then you'll get a duplicate entry (theold one will be flagged as obsolete).

Depending on how you've configured it ConfigMgr can combine the obsolete and the new record if you wish though you have to do this manually.
