phenry194 -> SERVICE won't install in sms package with advertisement (10/1/2008 12:39:58 AM)

We have a vendor app that installs a service with the app.  If I create an sms package and run the executable of the package it runs fine.  If I create an advertisement, it installs the app WITHOUT the service.  Any ideas?  I am installing with the proper account and everything.  None of my other packages have this problem, but then I am not installing a service.  HELP???

What does the 'proper account' mean to you?

XP is the client?  Assuming you meant SYSTEM context (run with admin creds), you can use the trick of -- completely outside of SMS -- at the xp client, cmd prompt,   at 1-minute-in-the-future  /interactive cmd.exe.  i.e.,    AT 14:12 /interactive cmd.exe    Then at 2:12pm, a cmd prompt in System context will launch.  From *that* cmd prompt, run the vendor's install.  Does it work?  That will help you determine if it's user context that's the issue.  Maybe it will only work if run under user context, not admin context.

Another possibility might be that you need to check on the 'allow user to interact' checkbox on the program properties advanced tab.  Even though you may be running the vendor's setup silently; some vendor's setups need to be able to touch the interactive shell.  That touch may happen so quickly you don't 'see' it happen on the client during an install.

OK, I did what you asked, and it worked just fine.  The service installed.  I originally tried with the "allow user to interact" option and that didn't work (and yes, you are correct, I meant the system context). You know, there is a domain account associated with this service account, and I was wondering if that particular account has to have special permissions or something so the service will install via an sms advertisement.  The reason I am asking is that if you install the vendor app from the command line like I did, I need to put a switch in to point to the ini file for the answers.  That ini file has an entry that states ServiceUserName=<put in your domain name here>\<service account name>.  Of course, the ini file has the real entries.  I was wondering if the service account name has to have special permissions on the sms side of the house.  In fact, if you install it from the command line and don't put the domain name in front of the service account name, you end up with the same problem, the app installs, but the service doesn't.

What's your command line in your program in SMS?  I'm wondering if you need to wrap your install in a .bat or .vbs.  If you look at execmgr.log on the client, you'll see the command line it's attempting to run.  We probably need to tell it *exactly* where to find that .ini file either in your downloaded cache or on the Distrib Point folder.   I bet it just can't find that .ini file, and therefore can't find the entries inside of it.

If you post up your command line, I can help w/a wrapper vbscript.  I'm not a big .bat file person, but someone else will probably chime in with the right %dp~% or whatever that variable is.  (I always forget).

@ECHO OFF
SET THISDIR=%~dp0

%THISDIR%FILE.EXE /switches

You must be reading my mind.  Last night I adjusted the application to have the install run from a batch file (out of shear desperation).  This morning I did the dp update, etc., you know how long that takes.  After my last response to you it was ready to go and I tried it and it worked on two machines twice so far!  I'm going to try it a couple more times to be sure.  I was also able to do it with the silent installation and the "audience participation".  I'm not really great with the batch files myself, but I remembered I had to do with with a different installation a while back that included an ini file it had to point to.  I didn't have the problems with that one that I had with this one, so I had my doubts that it would work, but so far, so good.  Thanks for the input and keep your fingers crossed!

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that it all worked, and I pilot tested it last night and all the machines I pushed it out to got the service installed.  Yay!  Thanks again for all your help.  : )
