has anyone here tried installing XP onto the new Dell E series laptops?  We have a new E6500 that we just got in for testing.  We are still and XP shop here, and probably wont install VISTA for a while.   We had problems getting XP to install, and Dell's gold support say that the only way to instal XP on these machines was the adjust the BIOS Sata setting from IIRT to ATA. 

My expectations was that a driver should be able to solve this for XP, but I could be wrong. 
 
Anyone played with these and have any workarounds/solutions?

you need to add the new chipset drivers to the OS install
I think this has the same chipset as the new HP 6930p, so try this porcess, it worked for us

on you deployment point, under your XP folder in i386, create a folder called $oem$
in $oem$, create TEXTMODE folder and $1\Drivers\IntelSATA folder structure
extract the chipset driver package and place the files in both folders
The files should be:
iaahci.cat
iaAHCI.inf
iastor.cat
iaStor.inf
IaStor.sys
TXTSETUP.OEM

Add the following lines to your unattend.txt:

I am having similar issues with the Lenovo T500.  Looks like a storage drive issue.  I would prefer to not rebuild the image from scratch.  I have the original build (presysprep) on a Virtual PC.  I added the latest storage drivers and resyspreped/captured the wim.  The new wim when deployed on the T500 never makes it to mini prep.  I just have a blank screen with no HDD activity.  Any advice?

Unfortunately, with XP, you do have to re-sysprep and capture your base image to incorporate additional mass storage drivers.  When you say you added the latest storage drivers before capturing the .wim, did you add the PNP ID's (from Intel's latest textsetup.oem file) to your sysprep.inf, and set BuildMassStorageSection=Yes under the [Sysprep] section?

I'm not sure if this applies to your hardware, but it looks like you're missing a few from the latest Intel release:

Also, I've had problems in the past using subdirectories within the C:\sysprep directory.  I would try creating a C:\Drivers\Storage\Intel directory (or something similar, just not within C:\sysprep) and moving the following files to that directory:

iastor.cat
iaahci.inf
iastor.inf
iastor.sys
txtsetup.oem
 
And, if you're using the PNP ID's from the latest Intel release, your [SysprepMassStorage] section should look something like this:

After you capture your image, follow the steps above in post #2, by eschloss, for doing an unattended install.  The only thing you should have to add (to unattend.txt) is the [Unattended] section.  And be sure to get the drivers for the [MassStorageDrivers] section straight from the txtsetup.oem file.

I can sure give this a try.  Not sure why those two entries would be missing.  However, I am useing the storage drivers from the Lenovo site.  Maybe that is my problem?  I'll try your tips and let you know.  Thanks!

Unfortunately, none of the above seemed to work.  I have a call in to our Lenovo at this point.  On a whim i decided to just do a vanilla install of xp via disk.  I pressed F6 at the appropriate time and loaded the Latest Mass Storage drivers.  I ended up getting a 7b stop error.  I then set the bios from ACHI to “Compatibility” mode (which I believe is a the same as IIRT to ATA on the Dells).  Xp installed just fine in that configuration.

In that case it's definitely the storage driver.  If you used the F6 method during the installation, and you still encountered the BSOD, I believe you've got the wrong storage driver...or, you may have chosen the wrong controller when prompted.  I copied this from Lenovo's site regarding the Intel storage driver for the T500 (be sure to note steps 12 and 13):

[Windows XP]  CLEAN INSTALL

Before installing the operating system, install Intel(R) Matrix
Storage Manager Driver, as follows:

Note: Be sure to install Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver before
       installing the operating system. Otherwise your computer will
       not respond; it will only display a blue screen. 

1. Attach a diskette drive to your computer.
2. Download Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver from the Web site
    and extract the driver to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM and copy the driver
    to a diskette.
3. To make sure that SATA AHCI or RAID is enabled, start the BIOS Setup
    Utility menu.
4. Select Config.
5. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
6. Select AHCI or RAID*.
    *Applicable only in ThinkPad W700.
7. Change the startup sequence of your computer. Following the
    instructions on the Startup menu in the BIOS Setup Utility, set
    the CD-ROM drive to start first.
8. Insert the CD for Windows XP into the CD or DVD drive, and
    restart the computer.
9. To install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver first, press F6.
10. When prompted, select S for Specify Additional Device.

    - If your system has Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller,

    - If you selected RAID mode in ThinkPand W700, select Intel(R)
      ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E SATA RAID Controller.
13. To continue the installation, press Enter again. Leave the

    need to be copied from the diskette again when the files are
    copied during setup.
14. Follow the instruction to complete the OS installation.

CAUTION: The above procedure is needed and the ONLY procedure
       to successfully install Windows XP in RAID mode.

Working with the engineers at Lenovo, I did eventually get it working.  The new Montevina chipset does not allow XP to be installed normally.  The trick unfortunately is as follows:

·         Set the SATA settings in the BIOS on the computer to "Compatibility Mode". 
·         Install XP without adding mass storage drivers
·         Once you have XP installed you then install the mass storage from Lenovo ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7zim06ww.exe.  Expand 7zim06ww.exe and run install.cmd found (if using defaults) at C:\Drivers\WIN\IMSM\PREPARE\install.cmd
·         Once installed, reboot your computer and go into the BIOS and change the computer from "Compatibility Mode" to "AHCI". 
·         Restart your computer and it is now running in AHCI mode. 

From that point I syspreped my computer and it has been deployable to all of my T500s without the need to switch back and forth between “Compatibility” mode and AHCI.

I am not happy with the results since I am now maintaining 2 images.  My plan eventually will be to experiment with this process either with a virtual machine or by building the master image off the T500 and forcing the HAL into a UniProcessor mode.  But for now I just added the newly created image to my existing Image WIM.   I assume the same process needs to be applied to the new Dells as well.  I would be curious to hear what EdwardKK's solution ended up being...

Seems like the issue is that some lines are missing in the  iaAHCI.INF.inf file

Sending this problem to Intel:

"Short background info
We are installing our XP pc's using SMS2003 OSD and building the image using BDD 2.5.
In the image we load/install all needed storage drivers for our company certified models, this we define in the sysprep.inf file.
 
Then we apply the image to the new computer and before the reboot all corresponding drivers are copied down to the local hard drive and the machine reboots into mini setup and does plug and play detection. But to be able to do this the image has to be able to start of the hard drive and therefore the image needs to have the corresponding storage drivers installed.
 
Problem:
The current version of "Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager Driver" is 7.0.0.1020 in our image build environment.
That version seems to support the following pnp-id's in iaAHCI.INF

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2653&CC_0106

Hi all,

Got an E6400 here, and I've tried setting the BIOS to use ATA, AHCI and IRRT modes and no matter what i try, my OSD installation disk hangs when it's trying to modify the partitiion prior to formatting.  I've rebuild my OSD install CD a couple times, but just seem to be hanging here.

Oh, i should mention I'm running SMS2003 OSD with ZTI.  That might be a clue to help.  :)


Anyone got any ideas to try?  I figured if it was a driver issue, the BIOS settings would have allowed me to avoid that problem by going to ATA mode.

Here is the solution, found it on another forum but it apparently comes directly from dell. No need to change from IRRT to ATA, IRRT works just fine.. (You probably want to integrate the intel sata and the ricoh SD drivers in you image though)

Remove the battery while installing
 
I've been banging my head with this one for some days now so i though i would share it with the rest of you.
Just tried it myself and it works like a charm. Hopefully Dell is working on a solution so this wont be necessary in the future.

Ok. Guess what.  That worked on the E6400, but it doesn't seem to make a difference on the E4300.  What is it with these people at Dell?  Do they LOOK for reasons to make it harder?

Anyone have any other ideas for the E4300?

We don't have dells in our environment, but try this to see if it works.  I don't use Sysprep.inf when we deploy our computers with SCCM for Mass Storage Drivers.  Instead I do the following and it works without issues when deploying my image on HP models.

1. SCCM needs to be SP1 or higher.  Due to an issue with SATA drivers not being detected in RTM.
2. Add your mass storage drivers to SCCM drivers.
3. When deploying your image use driver package and select the option to install mass storage drivers. 
4. Select the driver package and the specific Sata driver from the two drop down list.
5. make sure to check the check box at the bottom to do unattended install.
6. I do a WMI query in the options tab (see attached screen shot)

Select * From Win32_ComputerSystem WHERE Model LIKE "%Model # Goes here%"

This allows me to have different models in the same task seq and only that Sata driver will be installed on that specific computer.  This makes it very easy to add new model computers when they come in and I don’t have to rebuild my image.  It also makes it nice not having to worry about having drivers in my images.

that looks cool.  But I'm not SCCM, I'm SMS. 

Managed to get the E series to boot now without the batteries.  That does  seem to help.  Now I'll screw with the drivers more and tweak away.

I have been using the same process as outlined by kodiak_da_bear with good results up until the new HP models 2530, 6930, 8530 & 8730.
I'm using HP sp40078 driver version 8.2.3.101 and selecting Intel ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller for driver and Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA Controller for model.
Problem is after updating my "Apply Driver Package" to apply the mass storage controller it does not install and I get the familiar BSOD stop error.
This driver and setup is working for models 2530 and 8530 but not 6930 and 8730.
Funny thing is I created a local test task sequence and all the models work fine, only when I go to the production task sequence do I have problems.
Help!!
