kcross -> SMSEXEC stopping with NetDisc (10/8/2008 5:58:57 AM)

Hi,

Anyone come across an issue where Network discovery seems to stop the smsexec service in its tracks?

kcross -> RE: SMSEXEC stopping with NetDisc (10/8/2008 7:09:35 AM)

I should probably add this is W2008 server with SCCM 2007 R2.

walsafi -> RE: SMSEXEC stopping with NetDisc (10/13/2008 1:35:52 PM)

i actually just got off the phone with microsoft about this issue.network discovery is designed for legacy support. i disabled it and stuck with active directory discovery and heartbeat. so far, i have not seen that smsexec.exe crash again.

Err. I was just talking to senior people MS and Network discovery is not for legacy system, it is still used today. I for one still use it. [:D]

walsafi -- please contact me offline about this issue.  Nothing big, just need to determine who it was at Microsoft that you spoke with.

Thanks!

Hi Wafi - I would also REALY like to know what was said and who you spoke to at Microsoft and more details about your issue. Perhaps you could email me some details, as so far I have had no response from Microsoft forums on this issue. ( kd.cross@hotmail.com). As Garth has just pointed out, network discovery is  not JUST for legacy systems, its used in a number of cases - one of which I have with my infrastructure of several forests and workgroup computers.
Appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

Kim

and one other point I should record is that my site systems are all 64 bit - this proved to be an issue with remote forest/workgroup computer installs, and dont know yet if that is relevant with this issue.

walsafi -> RE: SMSEXEC stopping with NetDisc (10/15/2008 11:21:54 AM)

sorry for the delayed response guys, as you can probably tell, i'm not on the forum very much. anyways, the deal is this: on our network here we migrated from sms 2003 to sccm 2007 around the start of the year. we've had a number of issues, one of the biggest being that all of a sudden deployment of images to machines had completely stopped working. i worked with various microsoft techs on this and we pretty much (95%) got the issue resolved a few months back. it turned out to be a combination of issues with our sccm configuration as well as a problem with dell systems in particular. i won't go into to many details about that, but it's more or less fixed. now we still have had sporadic problems imaging and remoting onto to user machines via sms. the other day i noticed that smsexec.exe had failed a bunch of times over the past few months in the event viewer on our server. i checked out the crash dump logs and found that the crash.log always referenced SMS_NETWORK_DISCOVERY. i sent a few screen shots to a tech there named eric as well as my crash logs. during the course of conversation he said that network discovery was for legacy support. he advised me to turn that off, which i did, and i haven't seen the problem arise since then.

a little background: i am new to sccm so you guys probably know alot more about this product than i do. i actually came across this site while looking for resources about the product because i'm the one at my company now who primarily works with it and will be supporting most if not all issues with it. also, kcross, you mentioned you are running 64 bit systems. we are running 32 bit, so i'm not sure if that has any bearing on the issue.

if you all don't mind, i'd love to know more details about how you are using network discovery and what your experiencs are with it in conjuction with AD discovery. and given that all of your devices are in an OU somwhere in AD, why would you need network discovery? pardon my ignorance, but as i said, i'm new to this beast.

rodtrent -> RE: SMSEXEC stopping with NetDisc (10/15/2008 11:36:23 AM)

First, welcome!  You've found the best resource for ConfigMgr (and other System Center products).

How did you find us?

Incidentally, a program manager at Microsoft found your post, and is concerned that an individual at Microsoft may have given you some bum information.  Would you mind if the program manager contacted you directly to get more information?

kcross -> RE: SMSEXEC stopping with NetDisc (10/15/2008 11:51:10 AM)

Hi Wafi again,

Well to answer your question - and thanks for the email by the way - the best way to discover AD resources is with AD discovery. That however assumes that your resources are in AD. If not, like workgroup computers, then you use network discovery.

Regards

Kim

walsafi -> RE: SMSEXEC stopping with NetDisc (10/15/2008 12:18:35 PM)

thanks rodtrent. i actually found out about this site on page 817 (appendix a: recommended web sites) of microsoft's sccm 2007 admin companion book by steven kaczmarek. he speaks of you highly.

i don't mind  if the program manager contacts me. i hope i am not doing a disservice to the tech who helped me, because he was quite responsive and did resolve my issue. i haven't always had that kind of quality service when talking to techs at MS (or other places).

walsafi -> RE: SMSEXEC stopping with NetDisc (10/15/2008 12:26:39 PM)

i see. all of our resources are in Ad, so i guess network discovery isn't necessary for us.
