Scottf -> advanced clients not recieving advertisements (10/8/2008 11:42:50 AM)

Hello,

In my sms console i notice that i have a number of clients in the " all non sms clients" catagory.  What is strange is a number of them i can use remote tools. When i deploy a package, they don't recieve the advertisement? I have tried re installing the client and still no sucess.

any thoughts?

thanks,

Scott

Make sure the subnets are in AD sites and services and that the boundries are correct in SMS.
Look for multiple records in DNS.
Check the local client logs for any errors:

PolicyEvaluator.log
ClientLocation.log

I recently had the same issue with a handful of servers. The client looked good, I could auto-discover the site code from the advanced tab on the client, no errors in logs but SMS console was reporting them as client NO assigned YES. The fix was almost to simple. I simpley deleted those machines from the sms console and allowed them to readd themselves during the next AD system discovery. Once they were re-discovered the showed up fine in the console.

Hope that helps some.

thanks,

I explained my problem wrong...The client receives the advertisment but doesn't do anything with it. Identical machines recieve and execute the same advertisment. I have reloaded the client but no luck.

From the sms toolkit 2, there is clispy.  If you use that to look at the client (you can use it remotely), you might be able to see if it's "waiting" for something, like content for example.

Scott, when you say it doesn't do anything to it, does it report anything at all like it is Waiting, No Status, Failed, Succeeded -- Succeeded doesn't always mean what it says.. When you dig down further it might say messageID 10057 program will not rerun again.  Look at the Advertisement Status Messages..Is there a Message ID associated with it? Is there a duplicate of this pc name out there or since you reloaded the SMS Client, it might be the SMS GUID is wrong (SMSUniqueIdentifier).  Check the pc's SMScfg.ini file in the %WINDIR% directory and see if the same SMS GUID is there..

One more thing, Check if there is a Registry Key with the name of the PackageID that's associated with the Advertisement located here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Mobile Client\Software Distribution\Execution History\System and open up the package Key name and see if it says anything in there.

Hope this helps..
Jerry
