rspinelli682 -> SMS 2003 on SAN ? (10/9/2008 8:56:31 AM)

I can't seem to find any documentation that says if it’s supported or not.  I know people are running SMS 2003 on SAN, but what I'm looking for is:

1) Documentation stating MS does or doesn't support SMS 2003 on SAN (MS does state in their SCCM2007 documentation that SAN is supported, can't find that in any SMS 2003 documentation)

2) Insight from people who have it running on SAN.  Any issues, especially performance?  We have 175k clients, so were a fairly large site.

Thank you.

We have used the SAN for SMS 2003, but will use local SAS drives for SCCM (faster).  The SAN replaced an old RAID 5 array and we found that the disk IO performed better.  So a primary with about 50K clients is using it fine now with no issues.  I don't recall Microsoft saying that you had to have local disks before.  And I know many other companies use SAN.  But I still recommend SAS on RAID 10 if you have a choice in the matter.

Brian, we're currently using Raid 10 SAS, and performance like you stated is really good.  The issue were having is that the datacenter guys are pretty much saying they don't want to support local attached storage anymore, and are pushing us to goto the SAN solution.  I'm hoping to prove to them that SAN isn't a good option for SMS (soon SCCM2007) and show we need to stay with our local attached RAID 10 SAS storage, but don't have any hard data/performance numbers to show them.
