I am trying to deploy xp sp3 with sms 2003 sp3. I followed the "Deploying Windows XP Service Pack 2 with Systems Management Server" white paper as described at  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947310 the part I get stuck at is how to package the "WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe" file? It is a exe and I belive it needs to be an .msi?

I just extracted the exe and there is an msi, its located in C:\temp\i386\update, i.e you run "WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe" /x and choose c:\temp to extract.

Do you have ITMU? you coud deploy SP3 that way too.

Hi thx for the respose. I use wsus, but not with group policys yet. I want to be able to push out sp3 to specific pc's with sms. long story...

I am trying to run WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe from the command promt with that /x switch but it keeps popping up and error stating the NTVDM CPU has encounter an illieal instruction?cloe or ignore tryied both no luck? Am I doing it right?

I have extracted the exe file to the i386 folder, but how do I now create an msi file or package to get it ready to deply?

You could just deploy the exe as is, without extracting it, see AMLM Admin post who is already going/gone through this -

If you have ITMU v3, you can deploy it that way via Software Updates
If you have group policy in your enviroment, you can also use that to install it, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457070.aspx
