lwalsh -> Vista clients and SMS 2003 SP3 (10/14/2008 12:12:23 PM)

Hi, I've been using SMS 2003 SP3 to patch XP SP2 workstations. So far so good.

As far as I know SP3 is compatible with Vista. We've since upgraded and installed Vista on a few machines in my office. These machines are visible in Collections in the SMS Admin Console. They are listed as having Windows "6.0", where as XP SP2 have "5.1".

But, in the "Software Updates" node there are no Vista workstations Requesting patches, or listed as Compliant. Even though I know these workstations require patches.

Would any one have any ideas on this? We do not have UAC turned on in Vista. The SMS client version on them is 2.50.4253.3108

Thanks!

Did you scan the Vista systems?  Can you see their HW inventory?

Uncheck the OS boxes for the Microsoft Updates Tool program because they block Vista.  There is also a post SP3 update to get those Vista machines to show as a program option - search this forum and you'll see it.

Try this hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939332 adds Vista SP1 to supported platforms, as Brain Mason mentions, ensure its not just going to all x86 workstations.

Hi. Yes I could see the HW inventory of Vista workstations. I could view all the hardware, and software info on Vista workstations through Resource Explorer. Vista Workstations were also showing up in our hardware & software Reports, as well as the XP SP2 workstations.

For the OS boxes for Microsoft Updates Tool program, do you mean in Packages, Microsoft Updates Tool, Programs, Microsoft Updates Tool, Requirements tab?
There were no OS boxes ticked here. It was set to "this program can run on any platform".

I downloaded and installed kb939332, and ran the SQL script. I can now see the Vista SP1 "client platform" option in the above location - but it was/is set to run on any platform.

From my reading and research, kb939332 seems to be whats required. I know making changes in SMS isn't always like refreshing a screen and waiting for something, so no Updates visible so far. Any further tips or advice are welcome.[:)]

You don't "need" that patch to deploy to Vista systems if you have the "This program can run on any platform" checked in the program properties.  For OSD you will need this patch though.

Since you said you have the "This program can run on any platform" checked then it has to be a different issue.  Can you verify that the system is being scanned using ITMU?  From there you can determine if the system is even getting the advertisement or if the scan results are not uploading.  Are there any errors in the advertisement status for the scan tool?

Also, looking at this from another perspective: our Vista workstations have Windows Update agent version 7.2.6001.784, and XP SP2 have 7.0.600.381. Can this be an issue?

And in Packages, MS Updates Tool, Programs, MS Updates Tool, on the "Advanced" tab - should "Run another program first" be pushing out a particular version of the Windows Update agent? Could this affect Vista SP1 workstations interaction with the SMS server?
