Hi everyone,

I'm just experimenting with SCCM 2007 SP1, and it's proving to be a very powerful tool.

Anyway, what I'm looking to do is to create a software advertisement for a package that I've created, with no expiry, and a mandatory assignment of "install as soon as possible", and assign the advertisement to a specific collection. That works fine - but what should happen if a new system is added to the collection a few weeks later? From my perspective, the SMS client should install the software next time it checks in and does a policy update.

Is this right? If not, how would I create something like that?

Secondly, the same scenario as above, but with software updates. If a system is added to a collection that had a software update with a deadline of the 20th, and today is the 26th, should the client install all of those updates, or do I need to create a new deployment, or update the existing deployment with a new deadline?

An even simpler situation to the one above would be what if a system is offline between the start date and the deadline has passed - would the updates be installed once it goes online?

I hope this makes sense!

Thanks,
Matt

To hopefully answer all your questions at once: Yes.  If a Collection is a target of an advertisement which has a mandatory start time in the past AND that advertisement hasn't passed it's Expiration date (if you set an expiration date), and it isn't disabled; so basically the advertisement is still valid and active; anytime a new computer falls into that collection, when it next picks up policies from the management point, it will run that advertisement policy (if it can... there are client-side checks as well you know: like is it in under a maintenance window, or is this a Vista box, and the program should only run on XP, or is it only supposed to run the install if the protected DP is available locally, and the client is VPN'd in)

In 1st scenario, my answer would be yes but in the second scenario, definitely No. In case of 1st scenario, any machines added to the concerned collection will get the advertisement.

2nd scenario depend on the advertisement status: what was the status of the machines i.e  Accepted or no status. Advertisement will not be effective if it has been expired.

Thanks.

I think there is some confusion about what is being asked in the second scenario. Deadline is a semantic used exclusively for Software Updates in ConfigMgr and is not the same as an expiration date used for Software Distribution. The deadline is more like a scheduled mandatory time.

Given the above, the answer to the second scenario is the same as the first, yes, the updates will be applied to the system added to the collection where a current deployment is assigned and the deadline has passed.

Thanks for the great responses - I thought this was the case, it's just difficult to test with so many things going on at once. :-)

Thank you!
Matt
